Which Antivirus?

If you're looking for paid for stuff, I'd recommend NOD32 without reservations. I've been using it for years without any problem. If you want a freebie, then MSE.

It is that time of the year again where I need to update my antivirus program. Having looked at various reviews none of which agree I am wondering if anybody has some opinions? It seems the best are (in no particular order): - Vipre - BitDefender - Kapersky

I find the best Anti-virus is a cave. I then remove the CD drive, disable the USB ports, and then remove the network card. Oh, and for good measure, I take out the power supply. That just about does the trick of protecting it against everything :-O :-D

You can search this forum for other such posts (a couple per year). Avira AntiVir[^].
I also recommend Avira. I use it at the office and at home. I used to use Microsoft Security Essentials at home, but it was using too much memory and CPU. Then went to the free Avira version, and bought it in the end, just to get rid of the Avira ads :)

Never mind keeping the damn thing working: I just wish some PC manufacturers wouldn't pre-install a limited time trial of the damn thing that I have to battle with to uninstall cleanly before I can get anything useful on. At least McCoffee uninstalls fairly cleanly. Still junk, these days, but easier-to-get-rid-of junk.

Amen to that!! They should do away with pre installed trial software altogether, if we want a trial version of something we'll get it ourselves! It's always such a time waster... :( Ja nee, McAfee is the worst AV in existence at the moment. I'd feel safer having nothing running than having that running... really, I wouldn't be surprised if there were plenty of viruses and things that use it as a launch platform :| And I stand open to correction but in my experience Trend is also a monster fail at the moment. They unsuccessfully made a release that was 100% Vista compatible that literally drowned the OS and CPU and made it impossible to do anything more than stare at the desktop (because it was hanging). They then released a much awaited update and entirely new version which... did exactly the same thing except the version number had changed. I haven't had problems with Norton/Symantec at all as a single user but I can say that whenever this topic comes up I always hear mention of Nod and lately MSE. Also Avira but that seems to be a more European taste.

Haha! They really make sure they get the most out of their free version with those ads ;) They're so big and red!! I did have some baddies that Avira couldn't remove that Norton did but otherwise I've only heard good things about Avira.

NOD32 - light weight on resources and has not missed a virus in years according to the virus test sites.

Don't these companies ever test what they release?

I answered this ages ago and Code Project lost my post. You Bastard Maunder. BitDefender, been using it for over 4 years, become a reseller, only use AntiVirus and not the Internet / Total Security crap. Reasonably priced and doesn't hog resources or get in my way.

I will tell my little story, so you have my opinion on some available free AVs. ;P I just fixed my GF's laptop, was infected with one virus and one trojan (I learnt that along the way of course). I couldn't download Windows Updates, nor some antiviruses/spyware, nor definition updates. So I tried some of the 'free online tools': Trend Micro and BitDefender did work. Trend's found 17 tracking cookies, and nothing wrong. BitDefender found 1 trojan, but wouldn't fix it in the online scanner, so I downloaded the free edition. Before installing, it found a trojan, removed it, that was good. But then, it wouldn't update, so I searched for fixes to that. Searched etc/hosts, no luck. nslookup gives strange result, tracert no route to host. So I checked the DNS settings, bingo, was messed up. Fixed that, and go, BitDefender big scan, takes a long time to complete, and... almost nothing, only cookies. I thought, great, my job's done. But... one of the symptoms of the infection was still there: impossible to put the laptop into sleep or hibernate modes. After a while, I decided to try MS Security Essentials, I started a quick scan and... infection! Found another trojan. Cleaned up, reboot, deep scan, 2 hours later, here's the bugger! A nasty virus, with replicating capacities, which is known for DNS messing among other stuff. Reboot again, and the system is working fine! Sleep, hibernate, all back here. So.... after this excerpt from my life, my 2 cents : Trend is crap, BitDefender is better, MS SE is good, especially for its price. I've used it on my own PC for a while, my only complaint is: it's annoyingly freezing Firefox after a download is completed, for what I feel is too long.

HERE HERE!!! I love avast. I use it on my WHS and all my machines. I also give it to my pc clients when they don't have antivirus or their version is expiring or expired. The free edition is great and the professional is even better.

Really? My wife bought a copy and aside from the fact that it adds a firewall (already really have that built into Windows) and one or two other features, I really don't see the big advantages of the pay version. What do you find is better?

I think it's better to make a list of important factors, for example (not reducing the computer speed, good support, being up to date, the size of update patches ( for low bandwidth clients ), . . .) then arrange them according to importance. then you will find one. I use kaspersky for my whole company, it doesn't reduce the computer's speed, updates everyday, and you can set it to update every client. but according to Avira and Avast the update patch size is big. Also you can buy kis, so that it provide you the whole solution ( internet security and antivirus ). the interface is user friendly and you can set every small detail like a Network Pro.
