The fact that quark is an internal rhyme for Mark in the first line clearly indicates it also rhymes with Dark!

So a Quart rhymes with Fart then?

I know, but that is only allowed if you have ever read it! (Which you haven't, because it is virtually unreadable). :)

Nope, but Mark and Quark are used as an internal rhyme so they sound the same*! * - apart from the initial M and QU, before you say it! ;P

Why? I can see no logical reason to pronounce it in that way: the 'a' would indicate 'ark' rather than 'ork' (irrespective of other peculiarities that have gotten thrown up here).

Three quarks for Muster Mark! Sure he has not got much of a bark And sure any he has it's all beside the mark. —James Joyce, Finnegans Wake

...but Murray Gell-Mann, who first coined the word in this use said: I employed the sound "quork" for several weeks in 1963 before noticing "quark" in "Finnegans Wake", which I had perused from time to time since it appeared in 1939... The allusion to three quarks seemed perfect... I needed an excuse for retaining the pronunciation quork despite the occurrence of "Mark", "bark", "mark", and so forth in Finnegans Wake. I found that excuse by supposing that one ingredient of the line "Three quarks for Muster Mark" was a cry of "Three quarts for Mister…" heard in H. C. Earwicker’s pub. As he was obviously in an establishment that sold beer, he was clearly as intellectual as a developer, and therefore could not possibly be wrong.
