Has anyone been in the OR with their wife as she gives birth? My wife is having her C-Section soon and she's adamant that I go in with her. Being who I am, I can't stand not being in control of the situation. That would tense me up badly. But for her, I'll move heaven and earth and I'll go in. I'm just wondering if other fathers here have experienced it. YouTube videos are quite moving, but the way they treat some of those babies as they're pulling them out is a bit cruel IMO.

I don't think the babies are treated cruelly, they are just got out of there and given medical care instead of a cuddle. I was there for both births, but it was not a C-section. I would be dead set against being there while they cut my wife open. Having said that, I'm sure I'd feel like I had no choice....

Yup, I was in there for the whole thing. Even offered to help! (they turned me down). They wouldn't let me watch the initial incision, I guess because some people don't handle that well. I'm the type that eats lunch while watching surgery on TV so that sort of thing doesn't bother me at all. At any rate, they told me I wouldn't be allowed to bring a camera in however my doctor told me to go get my camera once we were there so there were confusing messages. All-in-all it was an awesome experience. They may seem rough with the kiddo, but when you consider the alternative of being squeezed through a birth canal that's smaller than they are...let's just say that anything short of dropping them on there head is probably a whole lot less hard on them. Well, reading up on it, I've found that its "alright" to do that to newborns because their neck bones and cartilage is still not developed/set whereas pulling the baby out by the arms or legs could easily dislocate them.

Grow a pair and man-up. You are there to hold her hand and help her through a hard time, she is one who has carried for 9 months and now has to have a traumatic time. Mop her brow, hold her hand and tell her how much you love her. She needs it! Here endeth the lesson my friend.

Not had such experience till now. But I would say you should be there to hold her and be with her the whole time. Best of luck to you and Mrs. Mustafa, and congratulation in advance on baby. :rose:

Being there the whole nine-yards ( no c-section ). My wife's doc asked me if I want to participate, I said sure and they let me cut the umbilical cord. Sure I was shaking but what a joy.

Ditto what Dalek Dave has to say. Your main purpose is to be there for your wife. I have been through three, and remember them all vividly...You do feel quite helpless. Seeing my wife in some discomfort without being able to do a thing about it is very difficult. But the experience of seeing your children come into this world is amazing!

You're bit late Ryan, we've already chosen Mathew about 2 weeks back :) If its any consolation, my cousin's third son is Ryan, he's about 2 now, and he is gorgeous :)

Ditto what Dalek Dave has to say. Your main purpose is to be there for your wife. I have been through three, and remember them all vividly...You do feel quite helpless. Seeing my wife in some discomfort without being able to do a thing about it is very difficult. But the experience of seeing your children come into this world is amazing!

Nice! I'm going to step up to the plate. We'll see if I can control my shaking :) But I won't be touching the umbilical cord, because we're storing it for medical purposes. Its a great source of stem cells, along with the Placenta.
