French media are describing as a "miracle" the unscathed survival of an 18-month-old girl who fell from a sixth-floor apartment.[^]
The girl was left unattended by her parents when she somehow fell, then bounced off the awning of a cafe below. She had a further stroke of luck when a passing doctor saw her fall and caught her before she hit the ground, witnesses were quoted as saying. [. . .] The man who caught the girl was walking by with his wife and son when the boy spotted the girl falling.
Awesome bit of good fortune there. But her parents suck!

I was angling more towards if you have kids, you would know how quickly the little buggers can move and get themselves into all kinds of mischief... it only takes a second!!

That's why I'd never let an 18 month old play on the balcony on his own (not even for a second). I was so hyper-careful with our son that my wife often thought I was being a little paranoid, but better to be safe than any other alternative. :)

Yeah, but would you leave her alone on a balcony where she can slip through the railings on her own? The neighbor observed the girl playing there with a slightly older kid, so it seems to me that she was left unattended for quite a while there.

There are interesting reports coming out at the moment that are basically blaming parents who cotton-wool their kids for the number of young people dying/seriously injured, as they never learned how to safely take/evaluate risks. I tend to agree with this premise - people are so over-the-top protective of their kids here, that at the school where my boys go there are two bike racks... When I was at school, there were probably 40 bike racks in a similar sized school. Parental paranoia is (apparently) stopping kids from riding to school...

Yeah, I agree, sometimes you can be too careful and end up bringing up a real sissy of a kid. It's easy to see that when you think logically, it's a lot harder to apply that on your own kid though :-)

Or they would rather play a handheld video game on the way to school... Or they are too fat to fit on a bike... Or they spend so much time on computers they prefer to be driven to/from school... Or the increasing population density (and traffic) has led to roads too hazardous to ride bikes on... Or nobody goes outside because technology keeps us glued to our houses...

But, is there any indication in that statement to show the parent let her out. Could it be the kids opened the balcony door and went out on their own without the knowledge of their parent. Of course may ask, where were the parents. Believe me, I'd my share of slip ups, when I though the kids are in my sight, next thing you know they are playing in the other room, in the backyard, in the garage .....

Oh definitely... just like when my boys are doing jumps on their BMX bikes... The protective parent in me wants to stop them, the part of me that remembers doing it as a kid lets them go for it, the responsible parent in me stops me from drinking too much while they are doing it in case I have to scrape them up and head to the hospital...
