Yes, thats the trade off for the convenience I spoke of above. The sites listed in my profile are actually owned/operated by me and I am currently the only employee, I actually have more work than I can handle most of the time. I did have an employee but he disappeared, another down side is the lack of talented people in regional areas. But at the moment I probably couldn't afford to pay an employee anyway. If I had have known how hard it is to run a business before I started, I don't think I would have taken the leap... I am also lucky enough to have the support of a former boss who I can contract for at the drop of a hat. But if all of that disappeared tomorrow I could always become a prostitute, that's what I tell my wife anyway... she thinks we would go bankrupt...

My little brother - more than once - managed to climb up the rails of his crib, pull himself up onto the window ledge, work the screen loose (which most adults couldn't get open without pliers), and fall outside the house to the ground. Whereupon he crawled under a bush and watched in silence as the entire neighborhood searched, screaming his name, in search of him. Kids do the damnedest things, and it's no reflection on the parents if they fail to imagine all the possible things a child can get into. Gross negligence is an entirely different matter, as is deliberately placing a child at risk, but we've gone much too far in trying to legislate a risk-free existence, even for children. Childhood is a time for risks, learning hard lessons, skinning knees and falling out of trees. Take that away and you create a generation of weaklings, unable to cope in the real world. Just like we have now... God help us, these useless creatures will be running things soon. :sigh:

There are interesting reports coming out at the moment that are basically blaming parents who cotton-wool their kids for the number of young people dying/seriously injured, as they never learned how to safely take/evaluate risks. I tend to agree with this premise - people are so over-the-top protective of their kids here, that at the school where my boys go there are two bike racks... When I was at school, there were probably 40 bike racks in a similar sized school. Parental paranoia is (apparently) stopping kids from riding to school...

Mate of mine wanted his kid (9 or 10) to ride his bike to school (he was going to ride with him), but there was no bike rack so he asked the school what to do with the bike and they told him they didn't want children riding bikes to school because of the dangers and having to look after the bike and equipment during the day. They also made him write a form for his kid to wear goggles when swimming with a reason why to which he wrote "Because I am his father and I want him to".

There's a bit of statistical chicanery going on there. Another way to look at it is that more teens seem to be dying because people who would have died as toddlers lived to die another day. If you cut down the number of deaths in any age group you increase the number of deaths older age groups. Perhaps we need controlled accidents for kids. A service that will put your kid in a situation that will cause a broken arm or leg, but teach a valuable lesson.
