I really can't accept the nativity as described in Luke and Mathew as anything other than a nice tale with little or no verifiable facts in it. (Though it's responsible for some rather beautiful music.) At the same time, I see no need to run around insulting people who, for one reason or another, believe it to be true. Kind of like telling a parent that his kid is ugly. It serves no purpose but to hurt feelings.

Is that any different from what a lot of cultures were coming up with in their first fumblings at trying to arrive at cause and effect?
