Is science just a new religion ?

Came across a cool site for those long chilllout discussions in the breaks. http://blog.aimonger.com/2010/12/13/is-science-just-a-new-religion/ I know it's not programming but since I get lot's of interesting non related links from the lounge might as well share back :-O . njoy..

Er...No! Religion requires belief and unquestioning loyalty. Science requires proof and nothing else but questions. Asking if science is like religion is like asking 'Why is a mouse when it spins'. Meaningless and a waste of time. Science is the antithesis of religion, science requires intelligence and learning to succeed, religion requires stupidity, fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms.

Religion requires that things held to be true cannot be questioned, cannot be investigated, cannot be tested, cannot be proven, and are inherently perfect understandings that can never, ever change no matter what new evidence comes to light. Science requires that things held to be true must be questioned, must be investigated, must be tested, must be proven and are inherently imperfect understandings that must change when new evidence comes to light. The question evaluates to null; you may as well ask if electricity is just a new superstition.

What happens if you disprove it? Is gravity just a really sticky form of a belief system.

If you can disprove it, it will lift your spirits.

It does if you've disproved centripetal force.

That only works if you get distracted, say by a nice game of cricket.

Thank you, 5, Big Kiss, Cigar and Handshake. I have, for many years, been arguing with friends who are by no means stupid, but who are scientifically challenged, that there is no such thing as centrifugal force, it is centripetal! I see I have an ally in my quest to rid the world of this ignorant term.

IMO you can't disprove centripetal and centrifugal forces, all you can do is deny them, as I do. Newton didn't need them, Copernicus didn't need them, all physical observations that can be explained, get explained without them. They are urban legends, it simply is inertia abused by pseudo-scientists that want to swing a bucket full of water, and the reaction to it. :)

Sounds like they don't know the difference between a centrifuge and gravity.
