I think the country with half the world's population is raising an emotionally, socially, and culturally deprived youth. Are these kids going to have any compassion for their fellow human being, or do they see the world as a playground for demonstrating their supposed wonderful intellectual skills? What's wrong with being driven to succeed? Why are we in the west so eager to accept mediocrity as an achievement? These are exactly the reasons the west is in decline. Everyone is expected to succeed or fail to the same level so that nobody stands out as being "better". Your typical Chinese familiy is only allowed to have one child, and getting accepted into a college there is extremely difficult, so if you don't want your kid to be harvesting rice for the rest of his life, you have to use extreme parenting to give them an equal chance at success. I don't have a problem with the strategies listed in the OP as long as the parents aren't psychopaths.

I agree with this, in part. My kids get graded 'exceeds expectations', 'meets expectations', and 'does not yet meet expectations'. Where is the grade for 'this kid is stupid' ? I've been told that my daughter is getting there with sports, and I told them to stop lying to me, for example. How does pretending we're all equal, not mean we settle for mediocrity.

I don't agree, I think parents need to allow for some fun time, sleepovers, having friends, etc. But, I would agree that thinking that they can just float along and life will come their way, is also not doing them a service.

Haha, believe me, the Huffington Post is not any more credible. The wjs is a joke though. The have a history of BS, selective story editing, plagiarizing, etc. My company put out a press release yesterday and they started calling looking for a quote from an employee. I could have gotten on the phone and told them anything, I doubt they would even fact check who I was.

Saw her on Colbert reoprt. She said (fairly convincingly) that she wasn't serious - i.e. it's supposed to be funny, it's all the things she learnt from raising a kid, yadda yadda.
