Reflector, our beloved Reflector, will never be free again. From version 7 on, you'll have to dish out 35$. I don't know if it's a repost; search didn't produce results. Feels wrong. X|
Is it possible to stick with the free version or does it still force you to "upgrade" at startup? And is there any way to bypass the update?

ZDNet article[^] Quoting: [Ed] What about all the people using the free version now. Won’t they just continue to use that? [Greg] This is a common misunderstanding about .NET Reflector and it is something we have taken a lot of flack for in the two and a half years we have owned the tool. .NET Reflector actually has always had a 6 month expiration date built in to each version. Every 6 months or so you need to update to the next version of the software. A lot of people think Red Gate built that expiration model into Reflector but actually it is the way Lutz had run things for the previous 8 years. Forced update; as for bypassing it, it would be oh so bad. For them.

I don't think there are any updates to the program since I've used it, the beginning, that were worth getting. I don't use it anymore, but if I do some work with sharepoint again I'll want to use it again I'm sure. I knew as soon as Red Gate got involved that it would no longer be free.

Thanks. Well, could kind of see it coming anyway.

Such a hard hitting interview. Not that I use the tool and personally I think it is O.K. to charge for products and services but I think a press release is a better read than faux journalism.
Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. I also do Android Programming as I find it a refreshing break from the MS. "And they, since they Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs" -- Robert Frost

> but if I do some work with sharepoint again I'll want to use it again I'm sure Funny, I had to use Reflector on SharePoint assemblies not long ago. It did help solving the problem.
Ya, it helps with the long name junk.

Yeah. That's what they say now. Just like they promised to keep the tool free forever, this will change too.

From the article: "We were originally working on the assumption that the huge volumes of traffic Reflector would bring to our website would mean users would stop and look around our other tools. It turns out that this wasn’t the case." Well, *I* did what they thought everyone would do, and after looking around at their other tools, I decided that I simply can't justify the expense of buying their stuff for personal use. I think THAT is what happened in the case of a lot of other people too.

To keep the promise they made when the purchased Reflector. That was to keep Reflector free. They didn't have to keep adding features to the free version (just fix bugs). If people wanted the newer features, they could pay for it.

Read the article linked by Pete[^]. What do you expect them to do? get a day job flipping burgers, and hack on Reflector at night? The original Author, Lutz Roeder, already did include the "time bomb" forcing you to update, reserving himself the option to sell the tool one day.

I agree. Any shareware product that starts out at $395 is not even remotely tempting to individual programmers. It's not so much that their marketing strategy for Reflector has failed; it's that their marketing strategy for the rest of their products has failed.
Best wishes, Hans

I'd like to suggest that they continue to make a living off their other over-priced tools and re-reelease Reflector back into the public ads an open-source application.

To keep their promises. They didn't have to keep developing the tool. They could have kept the tool static and the new features could have been made as a pay tool.
peterchen wrote:

The time bomb was there to force you to update so Lutz would only have to support one version. It's Red Gate's spin to say it was put in as an option to sell the tool one day.
