I use most of my RAM (it's only 8GB but that's not too bad) for disk cache, sort of as an alternative to SSD's, with the benefit that it can also be used as actual RAM whenever it's needed. (and with the disadvantage that it doesn't work right after booting, but then just don't reboot)

How do you do that? My work machine is my first over 4GB, at 8GB, and I'm sure Visual Studio isn't using enough of it.

Jeez man, I remember boasting about the size of my RAM about 20 odd years ago, and that was with QEMM! (Am I old or what?)

Do nothing, it happens automatically. I have my pagefile disabled for good measure.

Yes. Do you remember how to low-level format a RLL or MFM hard drive?

I remember going from 2 Meg RAM to 4 Meg RAM and costing me nearly $300! But that was only 15 years ago. Then I was impressed when my new boss said he just bought a UNIX server with 700 Meg RAM! We thought we were on top of the world!

I have nothing more to say.

Wow, that was some time ago! I think there was a 10Mb HDD that I did it on before partitioning it (partitioning a 10Mb?), but that has to be 25 or more years ago.

At my last gig my dev machine had 16Gigs because I worked with huge databases and .net processes that used 8-20Gigs of memory. That was interesting to say the least. The production servers had up to 128Gigs.

My first 20MB hard drive cost me $700. 1MB of RAM was $1000, and you had to plug all the chips into the motherboard one at a time. If you wanted faster integer math, you had to buy /install a math coprocessor (8081 or 80x87) at $700 a pop - necessary until the 586 chips started to show up

Ouch. Reminded me of an ad I saw once. Found it again here.[^] 20 MHz Intel 80386, 2MB RAM, Cache all for a mere $8499! Apple's 5MHz, 1MB RAM for 'blistering' speeds! Then all the other ones. Prices are amazing! 10 MB hard drive for $3398! 300 MB for under $20K!

I have nothing more to say.
