I have been doing stuff with it for over a month, and I am still asking myself that question. I think we are using it wrong :) They say Sharepoint is the new Access, perhaps if used that way it is good, but we use it as a glorified web frontend really...

Sharepoint.Intranet.Employer.com is much better than Legacy.Intranet.Employer.com, as I'm reminded every time I have to access something that isn't converted yet; this alone is reason to sing it praise.

Jeez man, I remember boasting about the size of my RAM about 20 odd years ago, and that was with QEMM! (Am I old or what?)

Not old, maybe just obsolete. And I always avoided QEMM and games that needed expanded memory. I had a weakness for extended memory and HIMEM.SYS. Damn it, I am obsolete too aren't I?

My first 20MB hard drive cost me $700. 1MB of RAM was $1000, and you had to plug all the chips into the motherboard one at a time. If you wanted faster integer math, you had to buy /install a math coprocessor (8081 or 80x87) at $700 a pop - necessary until the 586 chips started to show up

I remember going from 2 Meg RAM to 4 Meg RAM and costing me nearly $300! But that was only 15 years ago. Then I was impressed when my new boss said he just bought a UNIX server with 700 Meg RAM! We thought we were on top of the world!

I have nothing more to say.

I used to sell 16KB of dynamic RAM chips for the Apple II that cost $600. The first terabyte storage unit I ever saw was at the '84(?) Comdex in Chicago and it was the size of two refrigerators (one upright and one on its side) that was basically a jukebox for 12" laserdiscs and cost $1.2 million. I'm looking to be the first on my block with a petabyte online.

Sorry to boast, but my PC has two internal hard drives, both 459GB's (Total 918GB's) If that's not enough room, I can always plug in my external hard drive into one of the USB ports. The only time I need this much room is if I save lots of long videos as AVI files.

Wow what do you need all that for? I still find 3 GB plenty on my home machine (tho a little more may be nice occasionally for running more VMs).

Minimum requirements as recommended by MS: 2 GB for Windows 7 64 bit +1 GB for Win32 compatibility mode +2 GB for VS 2010 for W7 64 bit That's 5 GB before adding tools, office suite, and of course the projects you're developing. Now if you want a similar VM setup as a developing sandbox, multiply by 2 and you'll find that even 16 GB will not last you for long...

Geesh, I remember ordering $7895 for an HP 85 64kB memory module for the lab I worked in during college. Seemed like a whole lot of RAM at the time.

Mostly for VM's. Nice to allocate 3G here and 4GB there and still have 9 left :) Oh, and Sharepoint 2010 development. 4GB just dont cut it.

As do I, but my system has 32GB of ECC RAM in it. It was the only motherboard I found with dual CPUs that went beyond 16GB. It can support quad core CPUs, but I could only afford 2.8Ghz AMD dual cores when I built it. I can run two or 3 VMs (using Virtual Box) and they seem to be pretty much full speed. They have from 2 to 8 GB assigned to them, depending on the OS (Windows, Linux, or Solaris). All told I have at least a dozen different VMs. For storage you need lots of disk space, too. So I have 6 500GB HDs configured in a RAID 5 with one as a hot spare. With the ECC RAM I reduce the concern of memory glitches, and with RAID 5 I reduce the issue of disk glitches (I had two drives die on me, but it still kept ticking). Everything runs out of RAM and any unused RAM is used as disk cache, so it is very, very fast.
