I know a Dave Thompson - used to work at npower. Is that the one you're thinking of?

It is indeed, I wouldn't be the dev I am today if I hadn't met him. I was offered the Job as a dev manager at npower a couple of years back, but something better turned up. Do you know Gary Coates, he worked there.

Their decision cost me several hours of sleep two months ago. Greedy buggers.

I still think RedGate's initial decision was justified, and the backlash was they've seen was way beyond reason.

That's fantastic news!!! This is a bit of a long shot, but do you live in the North East of England? I've heard of two developers there by that name (except the other spells his name with a 'p', the best dev I ever worked with).

I hadn't known about ILSpy (me != .NETGeek). But I assumed that this could have been the result of some arising competition.

I think that the decision to have a paid-for version was justified. Given that I think that the decision to allow current versions to expire was misjudged. It would have been much better had they decided to do what they are now doing right from the start. The indecisiveness, and increased free competition makes it easier for the conspiracy theorists to point the finger. Bad PR all round from RedGate.

"We also figured that, after the initial emotional decision, people’s logic would kick in, they’d calm down, and they’d realise that asking people to pay less than the cost of a decent meal for a tool that they love isn’t, actually, terribly evil after all." If he thinks you need to pay more than $35 for a decent meal, I'm not sure if he's either a food snob or living somewhere very expensive. I might spend that much once or twice a year as a splurge item, but it's far outside my norm; and only makes their reality disconnect even more visible.

As I understand, expiration was implemented by Lutz Roeder himself, long before RedGate bought it. For me, this is a clear sign saying "It's free now, but not yours." I certainly understand that (a) losing a valuable tool hurts, and (b) $35 can be a lot for some people. However, the level of outrage against Red Gate was simply... uncivilized. I don't know a better word.

Agreed. However RedGate had the code, they could (and should) have removed the expiry code.
