Quick Flood Update from MB [modified]

Our river usually flows at 400 cubic feet of water per second. It is now at over 40,000 cf/s ...which is just about half of the flow of NIAGARA FREEKIN' FALLS. Insane. Rain's let up, which is good. Army's here now, about 700 personnel deployed to the area to help with sandbagging and dike construction. I won't clog up the lounge with new threads, just thought I'd post a quick update. Cheers. Update: here's a home in the evacuated area: that's how we roll[^]

Not to rain on your parade. That's not a good one to use, but according to The Weather Network, you guys are going to receive 15 mm of rain over the next 24 hours, followed by another 15 mm over the next three days. The only good news to take from that is that the measurement is in mm and is no longer in cm. Best of luck to you and everyone there. :)

The aggregate collection of that rain is more the problem...so 30mm of rain isn't a big deal on the river, but the 800kms of tributaries collecting the ground water from the surrounding areas and piping it our way ain't too pretty to think about. sounds not to different from what the mighty Mississippi river is doing to us down here around Memphis. Good luck and start building that ark so you can float downstream and come get us too....

I have to say I'm a little glad to be away from those two rivers. On a lighter note[1], here's today's news from the Manitoba government's site:

I empathize. I live in a town of about 25,000. We have a 'Super Wal-Mart' on the outskirts; if it ever starts providing tattoo services or selling used books, the remaining downtown businesses are doomed.

delete this;Yeah, ours is expanding its grocery section and is already open 24 hours a day for 3 months of the year. They've driven out most pharmacies, small vehicle repair shops, oil change places, book stores, corner stores, etc. Our downtown is 1/3 empty. If there's any beauty to it, our downtown is high and dry and Walmart is going under.
