Are all programmers crap at speling?

No, it's not your imagination. Spelling is becoming a lost art everywhere. I blame it on the trend against beating children in school and at home. It's really noticable in schools, as I'm seeing that the great majority of teachers cannot themselves spell worth a tinker's damn. I have friends who are students, and see the assignments and comments from their teachers - at all levels - and few can write a simple sentence, spell everything correctly, and punctuate properly. It's a general trend toward an illiterate future, and one I fear we're powerless to stop.

I don't think you're imagining it. The spelling ability of adult native English speakers appears to have fallen in the past 10-15 years. CNN's TV and online media are prime examples (at least in the US). Txtspk may have something to do with it. Most software engineers I know also find it difficult to correctly write technical documentation. This seems to be a marked change from the '80s. /ravi

No. Not really. I personally try as much as possible to spell correctly and I will always go back to my comments to make sure that even the grammar is sort of correct! Even if it means writing a few more lines (a short story) so that my intentions are clear - an Achilles heel that stems from my background as an English major turned software developer perhaps?

The art and skill of good writing habits has become a lost trait among the younger generations. This is due to to several factors, the first being the constant interfacing with gadgets and gadget-like sites such as Facebook where proper writing is not considered important so new forms of lexical garbage and shorthanded conversions are used instead. Next, we have a seriously declining public education system that is more interested in testing students than it is in having them learn quality skills. In the 1960s we had huge amounts of essay work which followed us in to university. Our essays were scrutinized not only for content but proper sentence structure and the way in which content was presented to the reader. Today people simply cannot communicate properly anymore whether it be with the written word or verbally. Everything has been reduced to sound-bites as corporations promote the lowering of standards and quality in their products for profit.

I rarely make spelling mistakes in CP or on other website because I get a red squiggle to spank my ass. One common mistake I do do thou is use the wrong word due to typing to fast or even pluralise something I should not However, when I am typing important work related stuff then I take much more care with spelling, grammar, etc. My coding rarely suffers due to compiler errors, and when I am coding string data then I do so at a slower rate to minimize mistakes Basically, when in isn't work related, I just don't care about the odd mistake or two

I love the red squiggle under all my misspelled words, helps me look a little better at least (and I need all the help I can get at times) :laugh: Code wise I tend to screw up variables, though not always noticed that I have done it, thank you M$ for the auto complete of variable names in C# for example:
int16 intValeu = 0;
//random code
intvaleu = intValeu + intSomething;opps should have been intValue. Like mentioned I always take my time with strings and what the end user is going to see...

Please forgive our spelling, at least for some of us developers who started our career in some of the older programming languages where we had very short maximum length requirements for variable (member for you young'ins) names. So there are some excuses, albeit lame, for spelling mistakes. But, I agree with you about mis-spellings especially when there are spell checkers available. I have read many articles both on computer science and in magazines such as Time, Newsweek, and the Wall Street Journal with a multitude of spelling and grammar mistakes. I asked some of the people here in my office if they use the spell checker, and out of 15 people, only four (4) including myself do. The basic answer for not using the spell/grammar checker is that it slows down their typing.

I've always been crap at spelling, and there are certain words I have a complete blindness for. For example 'throat' usually takes me 3 or 4 stabs before the spellchecker can work out what I am trying to spell. I generally start off with throught and get worse from there. Also I tend to spell better if not thinking, otherwise there are some words I cannot decide how to spell if directly thinking about them.

As a schoolmate of mine once said when I corrected his grammar, "I'm just communicating." I do despair of much of the Internet "communications" I see of late. It shows that some folks have either not been taught properly or they're (their, there) too (to, two) lazy to care. I swear that besides not being able to use the right words some people don't hear the same thing I'm hearing. Of late I'm seeing some people use the word "sence" in place of "since." Odd behavior (behaviour.)
