Can somebody clear this up for me? [modified]

So we just got a company wide e-mail, does this make any sense: It’s time to be sure we are all doing our part to help in the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts for [XXXXX]. There is one fast and easy and VERY IMPORTANT way to get on board with this. If you are using Yahoo!, MSN, or any other pages for your default home page, I would like to make certain everyone at [XXXXX] now establishes our website for their home page on the internet. Please do this TODAY. Managers, please make sure your teams have gotten to it and see below for contacts if there are any issues with getting that to work on people’s desktops, laptops, and other hardware. This way, any clicks into or out of the Internet – through the infinite number of searches going on here routinely – will be sourced to [XXXXX] as click-throughs; that helps support our Google search placement, a critical strategic effort we all need to be concerned with. Building up the number of searches tied to [XXXXX], incoming or outgoing, not only helps us gain a higher placement for any key word searches in our industry/products, .... Since there is a wide variety of equipment being used throughout our company to access the web, you may or may not know how to set this as your internet default home page. Essentially, what you do is go to Internet Explorer, find the menu bar for “Tools”, click on it, scroll down to “Internet Options”. Under “Internet Options” you should find pretty simple instructions for typing in our URL, which of course is [XXXX.com] Then, go down to the “Apply” button and click on it. If you have any questions or have some trouble getting it done, just call ___ or ___ and they’ll walk you through. This makes no sense, how do I even respond besides a letter of resignation and bugging CP for a job? [Added] But, if it is simply the home page, and I then go to my google bar in the corner, or type in a URL at the top, will it have any effect on SEO? It wouldn't really be a click-through, how would the search engine track it? (There is no actually search box facing outward on our site)

can't your firm afford to hire few people, sit in front of their favorite browser and do - type XXXX.com - hit enter - clear cache - repeat
Yusuf May I help you?
My biggest fear is that there's already a bunch of blokes doing just that in our farm-sourced office. This was probably a great idea that one of the inbreds passed upwards to the head inbred.

Sorry, don't have a big enough mop and there's a hole in my bucket, anyway.

Oh Henry, don't tell me you're still using that old bucket. We have had this conversation at least once already. :omg:

When your message chinged into my in-box I looked at the subject and guessed it would be from you. Still, I can't sit here chatting to you, 'Noggin The Nog' is on TV (and what's more, they can't touch you for it).

That's a shame. One of the Flemish Tele companies tried the show once, but they had to abandon it, no-one here was nasty enough to make it work. :)

That's the main reason I don't watch it. Not the nastiness per se but the falseness of it. There are, after all, only a finite number of put-downs which actually work in a given context anything else is just boring.

Why doesn't said guru/manager just make a quick GPO change on the domain that will force all to have the required website for the homepage?
Michael Martin Australia "I controlled my laughter and simple said "No,I am very busy,so I can't write any code for you". The moment they heard this all the smiling face turned into a sad looking face and one of them farted. So I had to leave the place as soon as possible." - Mr.Prakash One Fine Saturday. 24/04/2004

Um. That won't help. What he needs you to all do is install the Google toolbar, then search for words related to your company, then click on your company's link when, eventually, you find the link to your company in the search results. Just having your company as the homepage won't do much other than generate views, but SEO doesn't count views. It counts relevancy.

If I didn't remember wrong, Google uses a crawler to establish the ranking of the website. So basically the more pages that links to your company website, the higher ranking it gets. Not the other way around. So I don't really get what your company is doing. Maybe just wants it to get more hit rate or a simulation for DOS.

Exactly! I may send him a letter anonymously. I told my direct manager "SEO doesn't work that way so I'm not going to do it, it will actually hurt my productivity."
