Agreed. Idolising or reviling the military is stupid.

Then you are both a Coward and a Fool. I served, I fought, what did you do? Cower behind your mother's apron strings? I agree that you should argue with and denigrate the fools who order soldiers to war, the politicians, but never belittle or insult the soldier. It is those that stand on the line that make your lives tolerable.

Neither of which would have been taking place on the scale they did without the eulogising political leadership of one or more countries. Daring to invoke Godwins Law and automatically preclude any further discussion on the matter how would the atrocities of Eastern Europe during WWII have occured without the rise of the Nazi party and its ideology during the preceding 10 to 15 years? Its easy to sit back in the comfort of our own freedoms and naysay men who have lived through and experienced the most terrible and appalling experiences and to expect every single one of them to be able to hold onto all the shreds of civility and understanding that we can from our armchairs. If you send men to hell and back, don't expect them to behave like angels and don't expect the experience to leave them unchanged. They gave up much of what we call our civility or humanity in perpetuity and I for one will be eternally grateful for those relative few that do so in order that many thousands more don't have to. If you don't like it, bite me, but the only reason you're free to say so is because of those soldiers and their sacrifices.

So men only commit acts of wanton cruelty when prompted to do so by some eulogising leader? I mentioned Bosnia first, and the Russians were equally cruel so you cant accuse me of Godwins law abuse. Again, you are being very narrow in your viewpoint. You are ignoring the vast numbers of soldiers who throughout history have not gone to war to protect their fellow mans freedoms but for monetary gain, and the sheer bloodlust pleasure of wanton destruction. And if you think man is not capable of those sentiments then you are really naieve.

It is the soldier, not the minister Who has given us freedom of religion. It is the soldier, not the reporter Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer Who has given us freedom to protest. It is the soldier, not the lawyer Who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the soldier, not the politician Who has given us the right to vote. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag. ~ Charles M. Province

Wilfred Owen Dulce Et Decorum Est Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of disappointed shells that dropped behind. GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time; But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And floundering like a man in fire or lime.-- Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-- My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.

And the narrow view is appropriate. Those are not soldiers you are describing. Those are barbarians with little or no human emotion or morality. :)

As have a load of my friends, Signals, 42 Comando, Paras, D&Ds. They all did it because it was fun, and they were young, and not one of them did it to serve or to protect. I dont knock them, they arent assholes, and I have no reason to think they would commit attrocities, but you cant elevate the role of a soldier to something noble, and you cant blanket award all soldiers with the mantle of protecting the rights of the civilions. Where did you fight by the way, what action have you seen?

Fair play to you. Mind if I ask your regiment/corps? I was RAMC, (for only a short time), before blowing both my knees doing the JMQC and being, (ironically), medically discharged.

Province

I have to agree 100% this time. I have a Nicaraguan friend who posts similar verse on her facebook profile about some "Sandinista soldiers" who died protecting her freedom. I don't know the details. It seems some soldiers and intelligence operatives of some country up north plotted with a group of far right militias to enslave her people. These Sandinista soldiers fought them and prevented her people from being enslaved. You are right, it's mostly the soldiers who prevent other people from coming in and enslaving you. You sound like a military type, Oakman. I am sure if you were around there at that time you would have enlisted to become one of the Sandinista soldiers. Good work Oakman. Congrats. :)
