BusterBoy (bet you haven't heard that in a while!), be careful using "audiophile" and "Bose" in the same sentence. :) IMHO, Bose caters to the consumer high-end market. If you're really looking for audiophile quality components, give Mordaunt-Short, Thiel (the CS1.6 is gorgeous), Totem, and Magnepan a listen at your friendly high-end audio store, then return to the Bose and judge for yourself. /ravi

I was looking at some 2.1 home speaker systems and have finally settled on a Bose CineMate Series II (599.99 @ Amazon). Compare this to the Sony 5.1 system which is 1000W for only about 249.99. So what makes the Bose so expensive? Remember these are not even comparables, the equivalent 5.1 Bose speaker systems starts at 2,200+. People who have Bose systems, do you regret spending extra for them? Or would you buy them again?

Usually, when you are buying expensive equipment you get: - Better design (aestethics), - More personalized manufacturing (small series). - High quality finishings (wood, nice looking materials). ... But, when it's time for the electronics, here everyone can get a good result, electronics are cheap and everyone get the components from the same source... It's like TFT tv's: there are 5 or 6 manufacturers of TFT film in the world and all the brands out there buy to them, the difference is that some brands buy quality 10 (a scale that is measured using the guarantee that there are no dead pixels in x*y space) others get quality 9... Then there is a difference in the electronics and the final price due to the materials and built in capabilities... i.e. some B&O loudspeakers adjust themselves to sound better emitting a specific sound and hearing that sound to come back thanks to some microphones that are built in the loudspeaker... After all those things have been said, I've not owned bose systems, but it is clear that this brand is a reference in the market. My this is not useful for me answer... :thumbsup:

Have you seen the prices they will pay for a mains lead? :wtf: I just want a list of names and addresses - I have a bridge they may be interested in! On a serious note: if you are thinking of spending serious dosh on speakers, get the shop (or whatever) to do you a home demo: the shape and furnishings in the room have a big effect on acoustics, and this varies from speaker to speaker. You need to listen to then as they will be in your home.

1kW for $250? OK unless you want to listen to music or watch films. My setup was $1,200 for 5.1 speakers and another $700 for the AV receiver - I plan to upgrade in a couple of years to improve the definition sound the sound, maybe $3,000 in total. Bose are OK.

No. Let me say that again - no. My Oknyo is a decent entry price AV receiver, probably looking to spend about $1,200 on it's replacement later on (maybe a Pioneer depending on the market) and Bose is basic.

Well I was considering to buy it from Amazon, so the home demo may not work out. There is a Bose showroom in my town but I am not sure they do home demos, and even if they did that I bet they'd be pissed off if I tell them that I will eventually buy it off Amazon.

Nish, There are better alternatives to Bose (both in terms of money and in terms of quality). I do not know what your budget and space requirements are. But you can get decent KEF, Mirage or Paradigm for the same price as the comparable Bose speakers. There are other speakers like Definitive Technologies, Polk etc at the same price range. If you go a little bit higher end you can get B&W and higher end models of KEF etc. Personally I feel Bose is more of a marketing than the actual quality (they are decent, but not great, better choice available) Try www.accessories4less and there was a sale for Kef 3005 series (5.1) for around $1000. Since you are looking for 2.1, one of the better sub is SVS (www.svsound.com). They too have some speaker packages. Other subs like HSU research (www.hsuresearch.com) has good subs. What type of receiver you have? Personally I feel THX certification is more of a marketing. We have a Bose Lifestyle system - which we won - so it was great value for money! Quality - yep, it is honestly the best sounding system I have owned - I'm not an audiphile, though, so it's purely a personal opinion. Would I spend the money - no, it's not THAT much better - and as someone else remarked, the remote (ours is an lcd touchscreen RF remote) isn't compatib;le with anything else other than Bose, which is a pain.

Thanks Ravi. Checked those brand names out and found that they were way above my price range. Eventually I went for the Bose 2.1. Considering I moved up from TV speakers, this is a very good move up for me.

Thanks Madhu. I did go and check out each of those brands out. I think they are a little too much for me, price wise and technically. Seems I need to individually pick speakers, separately buy a receiver, etc. I don't have a receiver/amp currently anyway. I was on TV speakers for years, so I went ahead with the Bose 2.1 speakers. I know it's probably not pro-quality but to me they were a major step up. In the long run, this TV will become my secondary TV as I have plans for a better TV/speaker system that will end up as my primary TV/home theatre system. At that point I reckon I will increase my budget and go for a more pro-quality speaker system. Thanks once again.
