Network admin just sent out an email to our 50+ person team saying, [paraphrased]
"I'm moving TFS source control to [secure offsite server]. Starting Monday, you'll need to change your TFS connection. But because the connection requires a company-approved VPN, you'll need to physically connect your computer to the network via an ethernet cable. Also, you'll need to install [company-approved VPN app] to make the connection work. Also, because of the VPN, you'll no longer be able to access your email via [desktop app]. Instead, you'll have to use the [crappy, half-assed web mail]. Also, because of the VPN, you'll no longer be able to chat with the rest of the team via [normal app]. Instead, you'll have to install [some other half-assed app]."
TL;DR: Our source control works fine now, but our network admin wants to move it to a secure server, and in doing so, we are forced to physically connect to the network via ethernet cable, use crappy company webmail, install a VPN tool, install a separate chat client, and manually "go online" in Visual Studio every time we undock our laptops. This is insane, is it not?

...and create a link between the two so that you only use the bare-bones as a server to provide the source... ...only don't tell anyone!

Judah HimangoI'd say it's quite normal for companies to require you to be VPN'd in to access source control servers. What's weird though is the need to have a physical wired ethernet connection. Not sure why you can't do it over WiFi or from home, for instance.

If it was just VPN, ok. But we're talking: switching mail clients, chat clients, VPN tool, and ethernet. Just so that source control is a little more secure. This is insane; this is not how you run a software company.

Of course, this makes it all that more difficult to actually use theose same systems by an authorized user. It seems that neither of those two things are compatible.

I've given up trying to figure out sys admins. Their sole purpose in life is to make it as hard as possible for people to break in to coproate systems. Of course, this makes it all that more difficult to actually use theose same systems by an authorized user. It seems that neither of those two things are compatible.

And yes lots of time is wasted, money lost etc - I sometimes think that if everything was open source it would just make life a heck of a lot easier - because strangely enough competition is actually good for a company(I know try telling that to Apple)...

Judah HimangoYes, it is insane. If your network admin is a reasonable guy, have a word with him and explain how much of your time it will waste. Assuming the source control is inside the company network now, it should be protected enough (after all it only needs to be as protected as each developer machine, since those have the full source on them).

I did just that. He is a reasonable guy, he said he'll try to alleviate some of the problems (with real solutions, so he wasn't just blowing smoke). :thumbsup:
