Marc Clifton wrote: BTW, didn't I read in some post ages ago "I smoke cigs"??? If true, did you quit? And if true, congratulations! If all of the above is false, well, ignore me! I quit 2 weeks before I left India. And after coming here I never felt like smoking. Dunno why. I've tried to quit in the past and failed. I was a moderate smoker though (maximum 10/day) yet I find it amazing that I could actually quit. I don't even feel like smoking. The state of the mind affects the brain I guess and it prolly affected the areas in my brain that make me a smoker :-) Nish

(oops, I didn't mean to bold the whole thing). Some comments about your ad. Studio apartment desired by a 25 year old male software engineer. Preferable in the Mountain View area near major bus routes. Non-smoker, no pets, desired move in date is the 2nd week of January. Can afford $600 / mo. Expecting to rent for minimum of 2 years. Short and sweet. Even if it isn't in the right area, you can ask anyone who calls if they know other people you could contact. Most people want first, last, AND a security deposit. Drop the line about "I cannot afford" completely and negotiate a payment plan in person or on the phone. It's easier to sell yourself that way. Probably replace the entire second line "Essentially...". You already said you're looking for a Studio apartment. It will of course come with heat, and the kitchen will include a range. By it's nature, it should also include a refrigerator, but you can ask that when you get a nibble. And it's expected to be clean. I know, you never can tell, but you do have the right to inspect it! Drop the distance limit. Instead, say "preferable to be near major bus routes". Drop the whole thing about parking facilities. You can ask that on the phone. Most of the parking is either street parking or there's designated parking for renters in many complexes. This is usually not an issue. Umm, I hate to say this, but I'd also drop the part about "landed", but keep the part about expected time frame. Good Luck! Marc Help! Also, thanks for your efforts to try and help me. I like your rail road idea. My office is near the rail thing. So if I can get a place near another rail thing it might help I guess :-) I think you call these rail things expressways or something here. Short distance trains right? Nish

What's really weird is people are offering a single room and a shared bath for 750/month!!! The whole apartment is prolly only 1100 and they are charging 70% of the cost for 40% of the apartment! Weird!!! Nish

But they'd surely ask me I guess Yes, I imagine so. But this is the point--to make contact with someone in the renting market--you've now got someone on the phone that you can connect with. You can be put on a waiting list. If they really like you, they may bump you higher than some shmuck. They may know someone else. Marc Help! Oops. BART only "down" to the SF airport. Sorry about that! I guess, living in Rhode Island, my memory isn't quite perfect :) You need to look up the San Jose Light Rail: http://www.trainweb.org/subwaymark/transit/US%20West/sjc_lr.htm[^] and: http://www.transit-rider.com/ca.bayarea/index.cfm[^] Note references to CalTrain, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, etc. Marc Help! Guys This is unbelievable. I think it's just about impossible to find an affordable apartment in Mountain View :-( I just put up this Ad on CraigsList. Can someone give me any suggestions to improve my ad?
_I am looking for a Studio Apartment in Mountain View. The maximum rent I can afford is USD 600 (if lesser, the better). I cannot afford a security deposit but I am prepared to pay 50% of the first month's rent as advance. Essentially I'd like to have a clean Studio (with heater) , a clean bathroom and a tiny kitchen (with at least a refrigerator and a cooking range) It should also be less than a mile from castro street/villa street cross-roads. I don't have a car right now, but I hope parking facility is also available as I intend to buy a car in the near future. I am a Software Engineer (25 yr old male) who landed here only a month ago and I expect to be here for a minimum of two years. If I do move in, it'd probably be around January 2nd week. I don't keep pets, and don't smoke. I do not intend to share the apartment with anyone in future. Thanks_
Regards, Nish

David Wulff wrote: Oh my! It must get a bit embarrassing if you have friends round while you are using the bathroom... Uhm, the bathroom is usually a closed room towards one end of the studio. The kitchen is an unclosed area on one side though. But then you are right. It's a little embarassing to walk out in a towel when all your friends are waiting for you to get ready for the party or some such gathering :-) Nish

Hi Nish The key, is to advertise "non-biased" (iow they must think you are nice although they know nothing about you) as said in a previous post. Too many sentences start with the word "I". One thing I will allways remember is what was said by my english teacher, "Never start two consequitive sentences with the same word." (unless you are a poet ;P) Here is the line when I look for new flatmates: "Bedroom available in 2 bedroom flat. Available...". Short, sweet. It lures more interest, as the description is vague, but in the end I maybe get 4 times the calls I would have received specifying more details. Think SQL SELECT * WHERE (). Cheers and good luck. Finding a good place to live is hard. :) WebBoxes - Yet another collapsable control, but it relies on a "graphics server" for dynamic pretty rounded corners, cool arrows and unlimited font support.

Thanks for the tips Leppie. This is all pretty new to me. In Trivandrum I had my own house :-( It's the first time in my entire life that I am actually worried about and thinking about money!!! Weird eh? I never knew it, but I was very nearly a rich guy back in Trivandrum (mostly on account of my parents) :-( [sigh] Nish
