Anyone planning to install Win8 preview tonight?

I was planning to use either the ImageX tool (if possible I have never done it before) or create a VM and then use the VHD from the VM to boot (done it before).

Ah yeah, that'll work. Installation will be slow but the boot will be much faster than in tbe VM. I may try this too.

If so, how do you plan to do it? Multi-boot with your existing Windows 7/Vista/XP? Or boot out of a fresh/independent drive? Or boot off an USB drive?

Seeing as our office OS is just now struggling into Weven I don't see any urgency to get into W8. As for fiddling with it at home, too many other things take up my time so nope...
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity RAH

OK, creating the VHD from a VM may not work. They are giving out the 64 bit version (for the dev tools). The 32 bit version does not include dev tools.

I will probably create a vhd and use the boot from vhd feature in Windows 7.
I get how you can create a VHD and how you can boot from it. But how will you get the Windows 8 ISO/DVD to install into that VHD? The VHD only becomes visible once Windows 7 boots, right?

There's a tool that takes the .wim file in the .iso and converts it to a .vhd
--Mike-- Dunder-Mifflin, this is Pam.

Interesting, so we can boot off the VHD and then install into the same VHD (assuming it's set to grow in size).

Yes, and boot into VM.
Not sure how well it will install into a VM.

I installed the 64bit version to a VirtualBox VM, it works OK (gave it two cores and 2gb memory plus 128mb video memory). It has it's problems and it's hugely different from previous versions of Windows. Fortunately I watched the presentation and quickly got used to pressing the Windows key to turn the "Start screen" off and on. My only problem is that all the apps I start from within the tile view, I can't close using normal means. Or at least I haven't figured out how to do it given that I'm relegated to using a mouse and so touch gestures don't work. Also the old standby of "Alt+F4" won't shut down the "modern" apps.

Not sure if you've done it before, but when you boot from a WIM to VHD converted (using wim2vhd[^]) install, it will execute the detection and first run stuff as if you just got done with the file copy. There is a dependency on the WIAK package, so make sure you have that available. According to Murray Francis at hnselman.com[^] this will convert and boot to setup, but it toasted his drive during the setup phase. No followup information available at this time. On a good note, according to Scott Hanselman at that same link, you can create a VHD and install to that (he has step by step instructions there).

Multi boot for the win. A bit weird at first, but works quite efficiently once you get to know the shortcuts. You can tell it's pre-beta though. Still, more then enough to give you a nice idea of the feel and overall workings of the OS. Looking good imo! I think the hardest part will be to get the system right for a multi-monitor system. Right now, that feels a bit strange... I'ld expect to be able to have different metro applications (including the desktop itself) spread out over different screens. Yet, this isn't possible (yet?) apparantly.

Tried and failed via a virtual machine. Burnt the ISO image to a physical DVD; then booted up MS Virtual PC, "used" the Physical CD (which works happily with DVDs) and started the machine up. Got as far as the "Developer preview" splash screen, then got "Your PC ran into a problem it couldn't handle, and now it needs to restart. You can search for the error online: HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED". Saving the state to VHD and rebooting the virtual machine just threw it back to booting off the DVD. (this is the 32-bit version).

I am looking forward to the new Explorer with the ribbon. I just wish that the highlight would cover the whole line, not just only the filename.
