Just remembered, it is illegal in the UK to get financial advice from someone who isn't qualified to give it. My brother is a financial adviser, but I don't think he's very good at it. We're both still skint.

Dear UK CPians, My bank sucks monkey [deleted] and blows back chunks. I've been with them for over 25 years but I have had enough of their incompetence. I won't go into how they've [deleted] up this time as I don't think that CP has the bandwidth. Suffice to say, I will be changing my bank as soon as I can sort out the current crap. Now for the question part. Which is the least suckity of the banks in the UK? Based on the hive mind, I'll probably go the other way. :-D

Metro Bank[^] has been outstanding: better than any other I have tried over the years and is open 7 days a week, 361 days a year, open early, shut late and great service. Am looking at them for my business account as well. They are what banks should be. :thumbsup:

I had good recommendations for them from 2 friends and I'm in the process of moving (after about 40 years with B* - the one with a squashed pigeon for a logo - who failed to process a transaction and failed to respond to my complaint and failed to do as the Regulator said - until he said it the second time). Good service at branch, reportedly good customer support by telephone, paying-in at any Post Office (using a free special envelope, but it takes a few days for the money to reach your account). So far, no suckage...

I use Santander - had only one small problem with them in 20+ years, and that was sorted very quickly and efficiently. Their internet banking is ok - it's becoming a bit of a pain as they keep increasing the security so they now send me a text with a code I have to use before any transfer will happen, but that's only a pain because the mobile doesn't get any signal indoors and I have to go to the bottom of the garden and stand in the greenhouse.

I was with Alliance & Leicester when it got swallowed up by Santander. Many problems. I even sent them a fax where they'd managed to send an instruction about one of my direct debits to change both the sort code and the account number - the guy on the phone at customer service said that was impossible; the company I was paying sent me a redacted fax showing it; Santander never even acknowledged the fax. Currently dealing with my late father's NatWest account - Haven't been impressed by them so far (had a couple of minor problems, e.g. wanting to talk to a specific person in a specific branch doesn't seem to be permitted!). I'd like to change banks to something better but as far as I can see they all suck!

Personally when we were in the UK for a year in '99 we used 1st Direct and were happy with them. My philosophy with banks is to choose one, give them a few months and, if they introduce new charges, or piss me off, I will move my account(s) to another bank, making sure I write (on paper!) with an explanation of why I am moving. It is inconvenient, especially if your home filing system isn't good - but banks will transfer standing orders and direct debits and things, so it's not too bad. And if more people did it, banks wouldn't introduce new charges as they would lose customers be so doing. as an example. at Barclays Bank, my Uncle sent me USD money for my birthday and I paid it into my account. It was $USD25 from memory, and the bank changed me something like USD$22 to pay the cheque in - without warning me of the charges, AND they used an exchange rate much more favorable to them than should probably have been the case. So I complained. The manager assured me that the fees were posted in plain sight (but he could't point it out to me) and that I would have been told when I paid it in (like I would have paid it in if that was the case). He also said that I couldn't possibly have paid it into an account in any bank without paying a similar fee, and that if I could find a bank that would do it for less, he would refund the difference. I walked to the bank next door. (Nat West I think) and explained what had happened. The manager was called, smiled and asked me to wait. He then wrote a quick note agreeing to pay a USD$25 cheque into an account there with no fee, at a favourable exchange rate :) Back at Barclays the manager wasn't happy, but paid the money into my account. The next day I closed my account and moved it to Nat West :)
