Entirely disagree: ST is science fiction since it is of our universe whilst SW is not. Both forms can include elements of speculative fiction (like FTL which is thought, at present, to be impossible) but SW takes place in an alternate universe thereby rendering it fantasy rather than fiction.

Hang on a sec! Are you claiming alternate universes don't exist? What about the alternate universe they kept jumping over to in DS9 where Kira's into a bit of S&M and she dresses up in skin tight black clothes?

Drat, I almost had him going faster than light :)

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy
      And it came worse.

There's 6 Star Wars films. Star Trek beats that just for sheer volume, The original series, the next generation (how many series?), DS9 again multiple series, Voyager and the last one that went back to the first enterprise, can't remember what it was called. And then there's all the films. BSG wipes the floor with both of them!

In what way is it not ST? You've got Worf and O'Brien transferred from the Enterprise, the Federation, Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans etc.

Er.... YOU CANNOT TRAVEL FASTER THAN LIGHT. Ok By bending space you may give the appearance of travelling a distance greater than light would have travelled in the same time, but this was done by travelling a shorter distance, not by travelling faster. Geddit?

...and why do you thing they called it a Warp drive. More seriously, it is a common feature of Science Fiction to take existing science and see what the outcome is if you allow for technology transcending existing limits - hence warp drives, and transporters. In science terms, I suspect the transported is less probable - moving the entire quantum state of complex organism, let alone a landing party, would be a tricky undertaking to put it mildly. Without those breaks, Sci Fi would be a rather dull literary form. Hell, by your standards even 2001 doesn't qualify.

Neither of them are science fiction. They both require FTL travel, which is impossible, therefore rendering them both within the confines of Fantasy.

I'm reminded of Homer Simpson. [Homer] I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around the city, keeping its speed over fifty, and if its speed dropped, the bus would explode! I think it was called "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down." [/Homer]

For my money, Star Trek was the more ground breaking for the time of it's release. It also had more stories than special effects. It had to really - it didn't have a budget the size of Star Wars. Would Star Wars have been made if Star Trek hadn't been so popular? Dunno - most studios won't risk that kind of money on the off chance.

Was the original Star-Trek series (The best one in my opinion) a success: It was after-all cancelled in its fourth year? Anyway, Star-Wars was based on the Kurosawa's movie Hidden Fortress and not on Star-Trek. By the way the budget for episodes of Star-Trek - The Next Generation reached over a million dollars per episode? In the question of Star Wars vs Star-Trek its got to be Star Wars (4-6) as (1-3 were rubbish and I don't consider them to be part of the series). Star-Trek TNG, DSN were rubbish. It was a soap opera that happened to be set in space? Even Babylon 5 was better than Star-Trek!

Neither of them are science fiction. They both require FTL travel, which is impossible, therefore rendering them both within the confines of Fantasy.

If impossible things make it fantasy then there would not be science fiction, it would all be called fantasy. Isn't fantasy more about myth and magic and assigning impossible 'powers' to people and creatures? E.g. 'Heroes' or 'The 4400' is fantasy, ST is science fiction and SW is borderline with this 'force' and all...
