Seems like a stupid invention. I and many others would have abused the heck out of it in highschool. Don't like someone? Organize a group to send them a barrage of texts.
He was being silly by calling it an invention... they do it because they can... everyone knows its a rip-off.

Well data-plans in India are way more expensive than here too. The one thing that's cheaper is incoming text/voice - which is free in India (all providers).
