Probably in a bigger city then. I've been stuck in traffic in LA, Chicago, New York, and Toronto. And while the traffic was horrible (long weekends too), there were such things as shoulders available for emergency vehicles and cop cars, and there were no pedestrians or bikes on the freeways. In most Indian cities (barring the big ones), there are no real freeways, you just have high speed highways where you have pedestrans, auto-rickshaws,and bikes sharing the road, and no shoulders of any kind at all. Most roads are 2-lane, two-way traffic. One-way streets are rare. Given that background, obeying rules would mean staying home.

    Regards, Nish

No, it was a small(ish) city, and the traffic was exactly as you describe it. But I will still maintain that you are wrong in this respect. having a minimum of traffic rules and having people obey them will not mean any less smooth traffic. On the contrary, It will mean smoother traffic and less accidents and less casualties. On the other hand, I realise that I am in no position to argue with everybody in a country that is as big as India. Besides, I don't really have the inclination to do so, and frankly I don't think I need to either. You will either find out yourself in due time or you wont, and in either case it won't do much to spoil the charm of your nice country.

It's not the size, it's the population density.

I heard on a TV program over here that something like 75% of vehicles in India that survive for 5 years will have been involved in at least one fatal accident. Don't know if that is actually true or not but that video would suggest that it might be.

I think that may be the relative issue, if you define survive as roadworthy then you probably eliminate 90% of 5+ yo cars.

I have to agree with Nish - that sounds like an urban myth.  I'd be more inclined to think that 75% of vehicles in India that are older than 5 years have been involved in a fender bender. /ravi

I agree. The guy on the motorcycle was attempting to cross the road against traffic (perhaps to park on the opposite side). There were pedestrians crossing the road casually. And all this from 50 seconds of footage.

That bike guy was going to the service road .I think signal was yellow and the car driver wanted to cross before it goes red.

Isn't your idea of heavy traffic a moose standing on the road? :)

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:

That is indeed HEAVY traffic. I've never actually collided with a moose myself, but I've seen cars that have. In most cases, the car will be totalled. But I HAVE had a deer collide with me. The stupid animal came running out of the wood just as I was passing by and smacked right into the side of my car. That damaged the car enough for my taste and to make everything worse, I got a €400 fine as well for failing to notify the police right away. I had to go home first because I didn't have my cell phone with me, and that wasn't quick enough for the police...

Was there not a recent accident in Canada where a car hit a bear, sending the bear flying through the windshield of another car and exiting by the rear window? I think the bear and the passengers of the car it flew through were killed, otherwise it would almost be funny.

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy
                              And it came worse.
