Day 1 of quitting smoking
-
Been smoking since 1990. Currently on about 13 cigarettes a day. Today, I stop. Got the Nicorette patch[^] on. The craving seems to be dealt with quite good. Just the habit of enjoying it is hard. Cheated a little by having 3 puffing sessions on a single cigarette, but that was all. It kinda tastes a bit weak now, no kick :( Maybe I should find a pencil to chew on :) I give some feedback next week.

I smoked for around 30 years; I started when I was 12-13. One day I just stopped. No patches, no gradual withdrawal. From a 20-a-day habit to zero in the time it took to crush my last packet. It was not easy, but I'm glad I did it. Now, nearly two years on [or could be three I'm not sure] I don't miss it. Mrs Wife and the girls don't moan about my smell [well not the tobacco one] any more, and I have more energy and get-up-and-go. Go for it and reward your self for every day without a smoke - say a nice bottle of Gin. :-D
Panic, Chaos, Destruction. My work here is done. Drink. Get drunk. Fall over - P O'H OK, I will win to day or my name isn't Ethel Crudacre! - DD Ethel Crudacre I cannot live by bread alone. Bacon and ketchup are needed as well. - Trollslayer Have a bit more patience with newbies. Of course some of them act dumb - they're often *students*, for heaven's sake - Terry Pratchett

Did the very same thing about 16 years ago and have never missed it - mind you, I was ill for a year afterwards - coughing all that crap out of my lungs!

I had a small amount of 'discharge' early on, but it quickly passed.

What dodgy packs of cigarettes do you buy? Packs generally have 20 or 30 (or less when buying from a vending machine in a club/bar).

Just make sure you don't compensate with sweets. A friend of mine that stopped smoking got a higher dentist bill instead.

That's a wise move. Best of luck to you. :)

Sounds like an advert for kippers... Anyway, day 3 and 4 are the hardest. 1 and 2 the novelty of not sticking dried vegetables in your mouth and setting fire to them keeps you going but after the novelty wears off. Towards a week you will be OK. The headaches will have gone, your blood cleaned up, and your lungs staring to heal. The nicotine craving will have gone by now, if you havent been using patches, if you have, then you are still hooked at this stage (its why I dont use patches when I want to knock off the fags for a while). Your lungs might start fleming up as your cilia come back to life too.
============================== Nothing to say.

Using patches. Can't see myself going cold turkey. I might wind down the strength of the patches sooner than the suggested 3 months.

Then thats not quitting, if you are going to fudge even a little then don't bother you will go back to it withing 6 months. This from experience, I manged it by cutting down as much as possible - got down to a max of 6 a day. Then I went skiing and forgot the smokes, didn't even realise till I got back to the lodge that evening. That was 7 years ago, still run short of breath going uphill but hey I'm supposed to be healthier! Don't fudge, don't accept a quick drag from a mates smoke, don't even go outside with the other smokers. It's a bitch but a beer tastes completely different after 2 years!

Ah yes, stopping smoking, something I'm very familiar with. Happens at least once a month. I have a pattern. I take Champix (or Chantix) which stops me fairly immediately and I'd strongly recommend if you are having cravings. Then I go to the pub three weeks later and start again. Good luck with it!

You probably don't care about my story or advise but I will send it your way, anyhow. I smoked 1.5 packs a day for almost 23 years...approx. 30 cigs a day...do all the math. I tried to quit, maybe 20 times. Failed every time. The fact that you are telling us here about it is a sign to me that you will fail as well. I hope not, but you most likely will. It took the birth of my son to motivate me enough to quit. I chewed the gum because the patch made me sick all the time. Every time I wanted a cig, I chewed gum. In 3 months, I was done. It has been over 5 years now without a cig. Most people don't quit anything until they hit rock bottom or have a life changing event. If your habit is bad for you, then death is always part of the solution as well. I have also been sober since 2001. -- cheers.

Well, I had to try, else I would crave it. Now I know it is not as fulfilling as it was without the patch :)

Like most things in life :)

Maybe, maybe not. Time will tell.

What side-effects did you have? I have a slight feeling of nausea and restlessness, but that is about all for now.

11. That was a fine trick: instead of increasing the price, they reduced the number of cigarets in the packages. But then, I am not smoker, so this may be inaccurate.
