Day 1 of quitting smoking
-
Been smoking since 1990. Currently on about 13 cigarettes a day. Today, I stop. Got the Nicorette patch[^] on. The craving seems to be dealt with quite good. Just the habit of enjoying it is hard. Cheated a little by having 3 puffing sessions on a single cigarette, but that was all. It kinda tastes a bit weak now, no kick :( Maybe I should find a pencil to chew on :) I give some feedback next week.
My wife used Chantrix (sp?) for about a month about 4 years ago, and hasn't smoked a cigarette since.

You probably don't care about my story or advise but I will send it your way, anyhow. I smoked 1.5 packs a day for almost 23 years...approx. 30 cigs a day...do all the math. I tried to quit, maybe 20 times. Failed every time. The fact that you are telling us here about it is a sign to me that you will fail as well. I hope not, but you most likely will. It took the birth of my son to motivate me enough to quit. I chewed the gum because the patch made me sick all the time. Every time I wanted a cig, I chewed gum. In 3 months, I was done. It has been over 5 years now without a cig. Most people don't quit anything until they hit rock bottom or have a life changing event. If your habit is bad for you, then death is always part of the solution as well. I have also been sober since 2001. -- cheers.

That stuff looks a bit dodgy. Zyban was suggested by my doctor, and from Wikipedia it appears to be not as controversial as Chantrix.

Don't be such a wuss! Ditch the patches. You (As in 'we') used nicotine as a crutch for some perceived insufficiency in your existence and you are now using the patches to stave off some non-existent pain from withdrawal. When I gave up after some 50 years of up to 50 a day I did it cold camel (that's like cold turkey but you get the hump more). You should do the same. You do not need the cigarettes and you most certainly do not need the patches. Stick at it man and good luck.

OK, I'll drop the patches when they are finished. I only have a week's worth of them. Then I'll test next week Monday without anything and see if I can handle it.

Maybe, maybe not. Time will tell.

What side-effects did you have? I have a slight feeling of nausea and restlessness, but that is about all for now.

I had nausea and a bad headache. This did not pass...ever, so I quit the patch completely. Regarding the gum: I would get a little headache from the first chew/gum of the day but it was smooth sailing after that. I followed the program that came with the gum...gradually weening off to the end (approx. 3 months time). I really hope this works out for you. By the way, having friends that smoke, does not help in any way and will almost always make your road to recovery impossible. Something to think about.

My advise to you, is to NOT use drugs to kick this habit. These drugs have been known to have some really f'd up side effects and you don't need the gamble now in your life.

Lucky I dont have many friends, and very little of them still smoke. I am also not a social creature anymore, so I dont go out to drinking holes much (if at all).

The nicotine craving will have gone by now, if you havent been using patches, if you have, then you are still hooked at this stage (its why I dont use patches when I want to knock off the fags for a while).
Using patches. Can't see myself going cold turkey. I might wind down the strength of the patches sooner than the suggested 3 months.

what are you gonna do with this money ?
A years supply of cigarettes (~R6000) is about the same as half a PC...

So, which half of the PC would you go for?
Bottom half of course ;P

Been smoking since 1990. Currently on about 13 cigarettes a day. Today, I stop. Got the Nicorette patch[^] on. The craving seems to be dealt with quite good. Just the habit of enjoying it is hard. Cheated a little by having 3 puffing sessions on a single cigarette, but that was all. It kinda tastes a bit weak now, no kick :( Maybe I should find a pencil to chew on :) I give some feedback next week.

Good luck you will feel a lot better for it.
Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

I don't agree - the fact that you are telling us means you are accountable and you have all our support (at least mine). I wish you all the best and just keep repeating to yourself when times get hard, "I am an ex-smoker".

You should put the number of days in your sig. The visibility of the performance may help resisting the temptation.
