Not true! Every single time this has happened to me there was no prior mention of needing to restart to install updates. And I was not looking for sympathy!

I wander around the office to see the "you need to reboot" all the time, maybe it is only XP.

It does this on Windows 7 as well just not all the time (at least in my experience). In fact since I last installed my OS about 7 months ago I have had a lot of updates installed but have only been nagged to restart to finish once or twice.

Just press the windows key and R then type "services.msc" - navigate to automatic updates, right click and select stop - that will put an end to that annoying message :)

I know a lot of people here don't have automatic updates turned on but I do, so yeah I consider that a really dumb thing to do. I also turn my machine off 90% of time when I leave the office, instal updates when they arrive and reboot immediately when asked. One of the things I DON'T do is fuck with the AV/Security of the system.

This gets you about zero sympathy, if you don't reboot your machine as soon as asked then you get what you deserve. The bloody thing sits there and bitches at you until you reboot, not like it sneaks up on you.

On XP it will reset the automatic updates to "on" once you have rebooted(I always switch off at the end of the day) - this method just buys you that hour or so without the annoyance of the box popping up all the time while you are working...

Just reinstalled Windows 7 at home this week. One fine day when I was shutting down my PC, Windows decided that it was great to install updates. The usual message: "Do not turn off your PC". A few minutes later: Please do not turn off your PC. Installing update 5 of 11. And then surprise....powercut(To make things worse windows was stuck on update 5 of 11 and moved on to 6 JUST when my UPS battery backup ran out)! This screwed my windows folder and all so bad that system restore failed for every single attempt on almost all restore points and a added plus was that any USB device plugged in was automatically.....ejected. Oh well.. Note to self: Never ever underestimate the power of a powercut and...windows update. -_-!

And this is why you need an uninterruptable power supply.

Ok so there are of course some cases where it is valid to complete something before rebooting but I've seen this nag screen days after the update has completed.

I have an uninterruptable power supply(UPS) as I mentioned in my post but unfortunately, it isn't as uninterruptable as it claims to be after a time limit of about 15 mins. Not the great UPS you would have imagined. :D

Yes - unfortunately UPSs are only meant to provide you with enough time to shutdown safely - unfortunately with the windows update you were damned if you did shutdown and damned if you didn't...

Mostly because when I was on my XP machine, it took ten minutes or so to do a reboot. I'll put up with that when I turn it on - I can go for a coffee - but not just at the whim of Microshaft!

Don't talk to me about the reboot time, Win7 and every sercurity product ever invented to kill a processor. Reboot takes about 5 minutes till the network come on line. I have to reboot a couple of times a day and it just pisses me off severely.

The perfect example I was looking for, in XP admittedly, why the fucking hell don't you reboot when it shows up. You KNOW it won't go away until you do but Oh no you're not going to interupt what you're doing you'll just put up with the nag screen, talk about stoopid! The 1 vote is to balance the idiot that thinks this ignorance is cool

The computer is supposed to be a tool, not something that dictates working patterns. If I'm in the middle of coding (and hey, it's my job, I'm usually in the middle of coding something) then I don't want the computer telling me it needs a five minute timeout and that it wants to close all the windows that I have open because I want the contents visible for my work! Enforced updates are a significant hit on productivity and I have them turned off ... it can update when I tell it that's okay, thank you very much.

Sure but my updates turn turn up when I turn on the PC, which takes forever anyway so giving the update 5 minutes and another 5 to reboot before I get into the daily is not a problem. As said 90% of the time I shut down overnight.
