Insuring your laptops?

How many of you do this, specially those that work from home and travel with reasonably expensive laptops? For approximately 4000 dollars of laptop/accessories, it's approximately 90/year for a 0-deductible (which I think is a little too much). Anyone has any recommendations?

I don't buy "reasonably expensive" laptops. The last one I bought was $400. If I lose it, or it gets stolen or somehow damaged, I'll just buy another one.

This is from one of the top-5 insurance companies in the US. And it covers theft/damage due to fire etc. but not parts failing (which would be covered by the manufacturer warranty I guess).

Wow! that's pretty expensive laptop. I think for one or two years the insurance amount is not bad. After 2 years the laptop will be kind of obsolete anyway.

The only insurance I normally have is that which I am legally required to have (Motor insurance, mostly). I think of insurance as gambling with a big company that not only won't tell you the odds, but won't give you your winnings without a fight either...

it should be covered by your home insurances. Insurring consummer goods is pointless, there is no value in them (talking about the hardware, not what is inside).
Watched code never compiles.

What are you insuring it against? Theft, Normal Perils (Fire, Wind, etc)? Most of these would be handled under your renter's/homeowners insurance (if the loss is at home) but with a deductible (standard is $500). If it your worried about it in your car, there are usually some endorsement that would cover special personal property in your car in case of an accident but again a deductible is usually required. The $90 a year sounds pretty reasonable to me just because there is no deductible. Coverages under your homeowners or auto generally have deductibles but might be less expensive per month year.

Yes, but there's an upper limit for laptops/computers and the home insuarnce deductible is rarely (or never) 0.

I rarely use the laptop, but when I do, I carry American Express. But seriously, I transfer code to it before I need to use it, and transfer code off of it to a thumb drive before traveling. If it gets lost/stolen, I still have the thumb drive. It's not super-high-tech, but I've never lost any data (or a laptop for that matter).

Before you decide to stick with just your homeowner's policy, I would talk with your agent/insurer about it regardless. Your personal property coverage under your homeowner's may be cash value as opposed to replacement cost in which case you might have to pay out of pocket to get back to what you had. So not only do you have the $500 deductible, you might have to make up the difference.

I worked mainly from laptops for about 12 years and never considered insuring one. Other than a HD failure and the battery life getting short over time, I never had any problems. When traveling I always had a backup of important files, data, etc. in a removable HD in a separate case and I always carried it with me by hand aboard planes, etc. I would ask myself how much the $90/yr investment would save me based on my losses over the past several years. For me the biggest hassle would be reinstalling everything and no insurance would help with that.

I don't bring my main laptop anywhere risky. I have a cheap, lightweight, but fast enough, laptop for travels. Besides, with the psycho security in airports, I'd consider my laptop "compromised" if it left my sight, to be "inspected". That means it's trash. Data is on a hidden, encrypted, usb key (that I would attempt to destroy before they can take it, while screaming "WE ARE LEGION!" :P lol). I'm sure they've twisted the law so that they can put keyloggers and monitoring wares, just based on "suspicious activity"... :P

Are you saying that the laptop is owned by your employer? In that case it should be covered by thier buisness insurance & not your problem (unless you own the buisness!)
