I would not call "justice" a system where all you need to have a death sentence is a policeman, a sleeping lawyer and a plastic bag... But I've to admit that it was working very well, not white nor rich people were harmed. :~ -- Looking for a new screen-saver? Try FOYD: http://digilander.iol.it/FOYD

If he has evidence that some may be innocent, he should investigate further and pardon them. But no, this guy has to usurp the justice system that tried them and found them guilty and commute them ALL (even the guilty ones)! There is a man on death row that used to live by us when I was a kid. He tortured and brutally killed his elderly parents (he was adopted) and stuffed them in the trunk of his car. He then drove to Indianapolis where he abandoned the car to let their bodies rot. He was guilty, and he does not deserve a commutation, IMO. But this idiot Governor gave him one, and now I have to feed him (through my tax $) for the rest of his miserable life. Justice is not served.

KaЯl wrote: Is it about Justice, or about Revenge ? It depends on your point of view. If you're a close family member of someone who the inmate killed, then it's probably about revenge. If you're a sensible person, it's about justice: basically about taking the life of someone who no longer deserves it. If you're me, it's about that plus ensuring the killer never gets a chance to kill again, whether he's behind bars or not. Regards, Alvaro

Trollslayer wrote: How many innocents are you willing to kill ? We have a legal system in this country which, to the best of its ability, finds the innocent or the guilty. These men/women get multiple appeals. These men/women have the ability to be pardoned by the executive of the state. If they are innocent, 99% of the time they will be found to be so through the legal system. Our doofus governor decided to commute all sentences regardless of the evidence agaist them. That is a travesty of justice, IMO.

Do you want an hard-drive that stores correctly 99% of your data? Or a car that brakes 99% of the times you need it to stop? And you may be able to recover data or to fix a car that hit a wall for not braking in front of it but, unless you walk on the water and multiply food at request, it's difficult to recover and innocent killed. And I think that also culprit of the worst crimes didn't deserve to be killed. -- Looking for a new screen-saver? Try FOYD: http://digilander.iol.it/FOYD

I really can't understand your point. Maybe it's because I live in a catholic country and in a country where death penalty has been used in the past against innocent people by the fascist government... If I killed someone killing me don't resurrect the people I killed. But killing me give me no chances to prove my innocence (and you talked about 99% reliability, but I guess that you don't want to be in the remaining 1%, even if I guess you're not black or hispanic...) and didn't let me any chance to repay the community for my crime. -- Looking for a new screen-saver? What I said is what I believe is right and I don't expect everyone to agree with me. But you must admit that the governor of Illinois has overstepped his legal authority on this issue. Why do we need a judicial system when the governor is going to ignore its rulings?

KaЯl wrote: Who the f*ck are the legists to decide if a human being can live or not? God? Yes, you can think of them as carrying out God's will. In other words, God let the killer kill. So now God will let the authorities take his life in return. Of course, if you don't believe in God and that only He should decide when someone should die, then it's up to us. That's right, the people will decide what constitutes grounds for execution -- the same way the criminals can decide when/where/who to kill. Where was God? KaЯl wrote: IMO * There's no "except..." after "You shall not Kill", i.e. no "except if he/she kills first" * The risk to kill an innocent is always too heavy, even if it's 1 for 100 billions * It's worse to live a life long in jail than an immediate killing. * Death penalty is the negation of the capacity for a human to rehabilitate, the negation of the redemption. IMO - There's always an exception. If I break into your house at night with a gun, it's OK for you to defend yourself, even if it means killing me with your own gun. - The risk of killing an innocent is extremely minimal. The courts spend a lot of time making sure the condemned are truly guilty. I'd bet the risk of a vicious criminal killing again (because he wasn't executed) is probably higher than the risk of putting away an innocent victim. - If most people really thought throwing a criminal in jail forever was worse than killing him, then the death penalty would probably not exist. There's gotta be nothing worse than to know that your life is going to end and that you haven't got a clue how it's going to feel and what comes after you die. - Death penalty is the acceptance that a human being does not deserve to live, much less be rehabilitated or forgiven.
