New laptop

Hey guys I did my first major purchase after reaching the US. I bought a laptop. An HP zt1260. P4 1.6 GHz 512 MB DDR 15" XGA DVD/CDRW combo etc... But I have a question. It does not have the ps2 port in the back. is this normal? Will this be a problem if I wanna use an external mouse AND an external keyboard? There are two USB ports. But I dunno how many devices I can connect to an USB port :-( I also bought a laptop bag. Total price came to USD 1256/- Nish

I use a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse. Works great. The RF unit works from one USB port. Johan Lombaard Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein

I try to ask first what the policy is and , if possible, to get it in writing. I've gone to find myself. If I should get back before I return, please keep me here.
I've seen Dell, HP, IBM, and Compaqs all coming into the shop rampantly for parts. Something always breaks. On the contrary Toshibas only come in if someone has killed Windows, and almost never come in for anything else. So I wouldn’t tout any of the other manufacturers. Toshibas go through anything. Unfortunately the company I work for is in a contract with IBM. :(( If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

Congrats Nish :) So are you gonna go wireless? James "It is self repeating, of unknown pattern" Data - Star Trek: The Next Generation

You should have got a dell laptop in my opinion. They have got wonderful deals. Checkout http://www.dell.com[^]. You could have saved some money too. The mistakes made in this API make me realise that Microsoft has become big enough that it can shelter morons. If anyone working for me wrote anything this bad and tried to release it, I would kill them and display the body as a warning to the rest of the team. - Christian Graus about C# - GDI+
Rama Krishna wrote: You could have saved some money too. That depends on what you're looking at and whether you can get it under their small business plan. When I got mine, we went through and configured one exactly like it at dell and the price went through the roof. I went through and configured everything at Dell Home and Dell Small Business to match the specs of my laptop as close as possible (purchased one month ago, received two weeks ago) an HP ze5155. P4 1.7 (mine is a 1.8) 512MB RAM 40GB HD 15" XGA 10/100 NIC (no built-in wireless) XP Home, WordPerfect suite 32MB Video (nvidia but mine is ati mobile m6) CD-RW/DVD Combo Home gave you a free upgrade to the CD-RW/DVD combo and $100 for ordering online, while SB gave you double memory for free. On the Home site the total came to:
$1696 - $100 off online purchase + S/H + tax == $1596 + S/H + tax
On the SB site the total came to:$1516 + S/H + tax
Mine:$1499 + tax - $300 mail in rebates + 17 day wait :mad: == $1199 + tax on $1499
I *really* wanted to get a dell, but knew that in my past configurations -- I've been looking for 6 months -- I wouldn't beat that end price. If someone just wanted a laptop for web surfing and office work, the day after I ordered mine from Best Buy they had a Toshiba 1.5 celeron, 128MB RAM, 14.1", 20GB laptop for $500 after rebates. My dad was kicking himself the next day for not picking it up :P James "It is self repeating, of unknown pattern" Data - Star Trek: The Next Generation -

I hadn't thought about it much, but now that you mention it I can't recall ever being called to repair a Toshiba. Maybe I assumed that no one actually buys them. That's a statistic, though a sample of one is not terribly meaningful, that bears more investigation. A pity about the IBM contract - my condolences. I've never had a reliability problem with IBM, as they are generally well-built workhorses. But in every case I know of the performance delivered by an IBM machine fell far short of most equally priced competitors. And for laptops, that tiny diddlestick in the middle of the keyboard is the sorriest excuse for an input device I've ever seen. I've gone to find myself. If I should get back before I return, please keep me here.

That sounds EXACTLY like my Compaq Presario 1505US (also includes 1 Firewire, 2 USB 2.0, internal LAN and modem). I upgraded my memory 768mb, and I have an external USB mouse for it. USB should be fine for keyboard and mouse. Thanks Matt. So all I need to do is to verify if the mouse is USB supported when I buy one eh? Nish

Yep, I would suggest a logitech optical especially if you are using it with a laptop and won't necessarily have a "mouse ball compliant" surface :) -:suss:Matt Newman / Windows XP Activist:suss:
