Seeing as this is the music division, my guess is some US Sony Music Exec thought it was a brilliant idea after someone showed him the numbers of what happened with record sales after Michael Jackson passed.

Why does your guess immediately turn to blaming it on the US ? Japan's the country that. by dumping, destroyed the US Memory Chip market in the 90's and quadrupled the price. ,Then, when a US corporate consortium nearly finished building a new (and thus more competitive) plant, they mysteriously dropped the prices so low that they non-Japanese based plant became unfeasible. On the other hand, it's illegal to import more than ca. 1 Kilo of rice into Japan - because real imports would hurt their 'traditional' industry (still using oxen to plow the fields). When Kodak was pressured to leave South Africa due to apartheid, Fuji Film moved right in (Japs were considered honorary whites in SA). Japan suck to any but other Japanese: it's been the hallmark of their national culture since always. They're predatory beasts.

As recent history has shown us, RIAA members (of which Sony belongs) are greedy b*stards who would sell their own grandmother to make a profit. With names like Kelleher, Morris and, Berger it doesn't look like the Japanese are CEOs of the music division. My guess is that Sony Music Entertainment is who would most likely have made the decision to raise the price of a music album. Edit: I don't know who downvoted you, but it most certainly was not me.

"On the night of 8 August 2011, the Sony music distribution centre in Enfield, London was destroyed in an arson attack during the 2011 England riots.[34]" Wikipedia 'Sony Music Entertainment' I didn't hear of price gouging (at least not at the corporate level) for Sony's US distribution. Note that there was an English distribution center - and even if burned down, we cannot assume operations by England-based staff have ceased. Since the event occurred in England, and via it's distributions (so far as I currently know), it would seem that the gouging can easily have originated locally. Opening blurb from the BBC News Item: "Record label Sony has apologised for increasing the price of two Whitney Houston albums in the UK, hours after her death on Saturday." Makes it sound like an England-Only event.

Sony has actually become quite good at shooting themselves in the foot, with all the holes in their feet they’re bound send the bullets through one of the previous holes without further injury. Not exactly a good business model for sure, as I am no longer a purchaser of Sony products, but as it is said “There’s a sucker born every minute”
It was broke, so I fixed it.

More interestingly, the gave it the "report as abuse" tag, as well. I'd not suspect you of a down-vote on this - we were exchanging comments, and civilly, at that.

How many points did you lose because of this report? Curious. I gave you a 5 to compensate as there was nothing abusive about your debate.

It does sound like an England-Only event. In which case I would be mistaken blaming the US Side of Sony, assuming that they have a UK localized Sony Music Entertainment. All in all doubtful, in my mind at least, that this can go back to the Japanese side of Sony Electronics. That connection is what drew my initial response.

Isn't that the life cycle of all technology companies: 1. Make something everyone likes and have people throw money at you. 2. Don't listen to your customers if the complaints are less than 10% of your user base. 3. Pay bonuses to your salespeople and executives while continuing to give your engineers unrealistic goals. 4. Watch your user base diminish. 5. Watch your best engineers leave. 6. Watch your revenues drop. 7. Watch your profits drop. 8. Soak your remaining loyal user base. 9. Complain about unfair competition. 10. Die (or become irrelevant). Case histories: NEC, Texas Instruments, GeoCities, AOL, Atari, Commodore, Apple (early, mid 1990s), Yahoo, myspace, Netscape, Expedia, Borland, Netflix (this may be premature).

Most likely from the mind who is "from between the cheeks" Odd thing is that I've put up some pretty aggressive posts without meriting a vote of abuse. Curiously, I wonder if I also lost points (to the same person) as a down-vote. Are they mutually exclusive.

using tariffs and import limitations to benefit ones own country, even at the expense of the industries in other countries, is completely ordinary, all over the world, and has been as long as there has been trade between nations.

Offensive, yes. Abusive, no. This is my opinion of course but if everyone who got offended or got their feeling hurt, went and reported the offending post as abuse, it wouldn't take long for the Lounge to get real quiet for long periods of time.
