I recently was perusing wikipedia regarding power transmission lines and was surprised to discover that DC is actually favored for certain distance / power requirements. It's fascinating technology, and I learned a lot about the pros and cons of AC vs. DC. There was this interesting book I read years ago about Tesla and his experiments with a "ray gun" - he apparently claims that what is now considered to have been a comet or asteroid exploding somewhere over Russia and flattening several square miles of trees was actually his ray gun test fire in which he had made a miscalculation. Not sure about the validity of any of this, but it was in the book. Apparently the US military seized the equipment and that was the last it was ever heard of. Marc

It wasn't just dogs and cats, Edison fucking shocked an Elephant to death as a public display, to show how scary Tesla's AC was. Oh yeah, not to mention the fucking electric chair. That graphic needs to be modified to mention these.

That was then and this is now. As an example the US didn't even have any real child labor laws during Edison's lifetime.

For that time period it sounds pretty much like business as usual for most businesses and certainly true for the larger ones.

FYI, i did not rip off any bodys else content, its just that i did not get the original link from oatmeal and got this link. Yea i can agree that i was bored and lazy to search oatmeal/google. Still i did not put my name or any thing in that image, it still shows oatmeal's signature.
