They are interesting, almost no recoil. Was out one day practicing for an IDPA meet and one of the other guys had the semi-auto version. Less than a .22 in my opinion.

Damn, that's not making me want one any less! I have heard you can shoot the thing one handed like a pistol (as proof of low recoil/not recommended/ etc). What part of the country do you shoot idpa in?

      That's actually quite funny.

Thank you. I thought so too :)

Used to compete in Central WI but then I moved to Madison. Not as many places to go shooting here without more drive time involved.

Absolutly wrong. The AK is mostly steel. Steel = rust. The M16 is moslty composite & alluminum. The AK has more parts. That's why the AK is harder to dissasemble for cleaning and hard to keep clean overall than the M16.

I have cleaned both the M16 and the AK 47, and I disagree with you.

Ever held one? They have one at my gun shop, but I've yet to fire it. Someday... someday...

Yes, when I did the army service. Our lieutenant held the opinion that one should know the weapons of the enemy. The M16 was included for fun. Answered the wromg message. No I haven't, but I would like to.

The reliability of the modern m16 is much better than it was in the original form. However, I do agree with you that the AK-47 is more rugged, easier to clean and upkeep, plus you can pretty much do anything to them and they keep firing. The AK-47 would be my choice as well. Plus if you get a high quality AK variant, they are just as accurate.

The ones I've used were old. And the M16 was simply not convincing. While the AK47 was crude but still did its job.

true, the 5.56 ammo is pretty handsome. But also doesn't affect as much damage as the good old 7.62.

You don't have to kill them - just make them scream out in pain... They'll either drop, run, or die.

That's a tough call. If you want it to go bang every time (for while, anyway), I'd go AK. That rifle will shoot while fully submerged in mud. If you want better single-shot accuracy, and the chore of keeping it clean enough to go bang every time, I'd go M16.

First, the ammo for both is not the same. An AK is 7.62x39 and an M16 is 5.56, which is a smaller round. The AK is an assult weapon designed for close in combat and is a piece of crap. It requires constant maintenance if you don't want a to lug around an 11.5 pound hunk of rust. It does however have more stopping power than the M16. It is can be fired semi or full auto. Although the M16A2 is characterized as an "assult rifle", it was really designed for longer engagements and is mostly made of composite materials so it has better resiliency to weather. It is lighter than the AK at 7.8 pounds and fires semi-auto or 3 round burst. This design was supposed to help in accuracy as it elimiates the "spray & pray" factor. See this[^] for a decent comparison.

BUT, the AR can be chambered for that cartridge by simply changing the upper. The mags are even interchangeable. I'd rather have the 5.56 anyway (mostly because I have 6000 rounds of it already, along with a little more than 3500 rounds of .45ACP)...
