Actually thinking back to when this started I did do something different. I didnt eat much through the day, and ate to make it up at the end of the day. I ate once and then ate again about two hours later. I remember, after reading your link, telling my wife that I felt happy. I was absolutely stuffed, and still under my calorie limit. I hadn't been stuffed like that since about mid Feb. and it just made me feel good to be full. Like on thanksgiving I guess. That was the day it started. Maybe I broke myself doing that. I need to figure out how to fix it now :(

See a doctor. Seriously, I'm just some dick on the Internet. It could be something else, I don't know, in any case a doctor can help.

I dont really think a doctor can fix it, or would know. I'd be more apt to talk to my coach and he would either send me to the team nutritionist or someone else who would actually know. I might get ahold of the homeopath that helped me with my back though.

So since Friday I have been having a little problem that is sorta freaking me out. I call it "food mode" but here is a little description: When I eat, or am around food I have an uncontrollable urge to just eat. I will eat until I almost get sick, and then I summon the will power (for fear of vomiting) to stop. While I'm sitting with actual pain in my stomach from eating to much, I'm still hungry. Like my mind and body are telling me I need to eat. I will continue eating until there is no more readily available food. Even when I stop eating, the hungry feeling lasts around 15 minutes after. It's like munchies I guess, but like a super uncontrollable version. So far I've been able to do things like salad, steamed veggies, cheese sticks, veggie straws, etc, so I haven't been blowing my calories out of the water. It's been kinda freaking me out because I can't really control it. My first thought after a couple of days in a row was that I need to excercise more so I don't gain any weight. Now I think that maybe it's not normal. It certainly feels like a problem. Thoughts? -edit The list of foods above is in addition to the meal. I still eat the planned meal as well. -end

I was like that for many years. But due to serious health problem I investigated my case thoroughly and found out I have celiac disease (and other thing), that will damage the gut greatly and lead to nutrient absorption problems. After that I followed a gluten free diet and, after about 6 months, my compulsive eating greatly reduced!!!! I guess the compulsive eating was created by nutrient deficiency! All of that to say, for one reason or another, you too, perhaps, have nutrient deficiencies? Anyway good luck with that, even if I'm right, this is hard to diagnostic and resolve!!!

Possibly craving something? What is your diet lacking in, carbs, fats, sodium, etc? You work out a ton, might need some of these. Do you take vitamins, and get enough sleep?

If it's actually 'uncontrollable' then you probably want to see a doctor about it. I have days where I'm hungry the whole time, and the sight or smell of food makes me really want to eat. But I generally manage not to apart from when I should be. It is more common the day after after I've done some serious exercise (for example I knackered myself on the football pitch yesterday evening and today I want food) but it isn't as simple as that. I think it is that the body is demanding fuel (mostly protein) to build muscle in order to adjust to the new regime. A whole week of feeling that way may indicate something more serious, though, unless you've started a new daily or near-daily exercise regime this week. Perhaps you are having trouble absorbing protein so you are always short, for example. I'm not a doctor so I'm not going to try to get detailed ;).

Probably not. I tend to take one day off a week now that we started tough mudder training. I didn't used to take a day off at all. I did at least once every day, and twice on week days.

Evening foods lately have been processed about 1/2 - 3/4 of the time. I have been having a shake in the mornings, but that's been going on for a while now, and this just started.

Ok, what advice would you give someone that was cutting without any rest days while increasing their training load and not eating a solid diet. :) Sometimes it is hardest to see what is going on with our own lives. BTW. if you are trying to get specific results without keeping meticulous food, training, sleep etc. logs, you are missing out. Rest is a really important part of training, you make gains while you rest not while you work. If you aren't working in back off periods and rest days you will eventually get to the point where you are risking over training.

You're not doing anything drastic like cutting carbs or fats? A couple of people around here have found themselves in trouble doing a paleo / atkins style routine while working out a ton.

Until you see a doctor try to eat slowly. Take breaks and come back to the food after a few minutes. That way you're giving your stomach a chance to let your brain know that you are full. In any case, the odd binge is fine. All that dieting is fine but sometimes you just need to have pancakes.

Eat something super dense? Like a tuna steak?

That is the problem. I'm actually not capable. It's more than just want, it's a serious unctrolled thing. That is what is freaking me out. It's not like I can just stop it for a little bit.

It seems to me that you have displayed incredible self control in getting to where you want to be. How about digging a little deeper and finding a touch more now? I know you are motivated and determined: try showing some of the steel you'll need in the ring.

Ok, that might be the case, but if I understand the rest of what you said, you are training at a higher level than you have trained at before. You are dealing with the stress from your sponsorship, and you are cutting. I'm also assuming that you aren't keeping logs because you haven't mentioned them at all. You should rule out the chance that this is a medical condition. You should also definitely run this by your trainer or coach. If you don't have one, you probably need to get one, especially if you are looking to go pro. It's not something you need if you just want to stay in shape, but managing intense training sessions over a long period of time is a skill completely separate from actually doing the work. You should have a training and eating plan with periodization, tapering and rest, and it's a lot easier to stick to it if someone is working with you.

I know a few people that do crossfit workouts after fasting for 18 hours and then eating their full days worth of food during a 6 hour window. They've experimented with a few different ways of managing their exercise and food intake and that works best for them. That might work well for you as well.

-end
