Warning: May trigger tl;dr Just got back from a long, long vacation (2 and a half weeks), and not surprisingly, I find I'm more tired than when I left. No motivation to do any work whatsoever, just lazing around, doing "code review", and thinking about those beautiful, beautiful sunny days. Furthermore, I'm kinda worried, as I took the decision (which I think may have been rash) to go to France. Definitively. My girlfriend left there last year, and managed to secure a comfy job (at Mars...yes, the chocolate Mars) and a master's degree, and she's been pushing me to come to France too. After lots and lots of talks, I finally said yes, so now I'm preparing to leave everything behind and go there - starting October (I'm still looking for a job in Strasbourg, but no luck yet). On the other hand at least, I got a call today from a contractor I have been previously outsourced to, who needed some work on a program I developed a while ago, and seeing as the outsourcing company I used to work for is closed, they came directly to me. And the most important thing, they said they were perfectly ok with me working remotely (it's 1-2 month contract). However, as nothing is for sure yet, I still have nothing, so I still have no guarantee that I'll be fine, so still worried. So, did anyone go through anything like it? Leaving all behind and heading to...well...nothing? Any thoughts or advice? Should I post this in Q&A?

Well, I quit a good job as an ex-pat and moved back home to go back into consulting just when the economy tanked. One has to be a little crazy and an optimist to strike off the beaten path, do something that makes them wonder if they were crazy, etc. Keep up the optimism, work hard, stay busy and things will work out.

You've already been told off for referring to your better half as "nothing", so I'll resist. Taking your question seriously, I did just that. Left a job in the UK (OK, it wasn't 100% secure, but as much as most jobs were), and moved to Sweden to be with the (now) missus. Luckily, I left my old job pretty amicably and did a bunch of consulting work for them and previous customers. Then someone who read my articles approached me asking me to work for them. The interview was very backwards. Now, I work from home, have new friends, family (including baby boy), occasionally go to the office, and so on. Life ended up pretty good. I suppose I should make more of an effort with the language, but every here is so darn accomodating! That probably wouldn't be so true in DE or FR. Iain.

Yeah, I heard people are quite picky with foreigners looking for jobs who don't speak the local language, which is perfectly understandable, and I support it.

Yeah, I may be worried, but I'm still optimistic. I'm thinking even if I fail, it's not like I'll die, get shot, starve to death or anything. I can always come back to my country, and try again later. Still, it's a big step to do (even bigger than when I left my local town to go work in Bucharest, which is still a tad away from family and most of the people I know), taking into consideration that I'm accustomed to supporting the future missus, and not the other way around (although I'm thinking it'll be fun to be the wife in the house, at least for a while :) )
