Harassment online
-
Good. I hope more people do what you've done. If I were a millionaire I'd file harassment lawsuits against shady advertisers. My goal would be to shut them down, take all of their stuff, and leave them naked, cold, and without food on an iceberg. I'd start with the interwebs. Did a Michigan Mom really discover a weird trick to save tons on auto insurance? If you cannot take me to the Michigan Mom who discovered it I'm suing. Either that, or I'd just pay gangs to beat them up. I've not decided.

I used to get spam calls too. Then I got annoyed and I threatened to report one of companies I was getting calls from. Didn't work. Then I actually reported them. Don't know what happened with my complaint, but I suddenly stopped getting calls from ALL of them.

I still find it odd that we have laws with prison terms for annoying someone online, but no defense from corporations. I was just considering this when I got an automated advertisement call on my cell phone from a blocked number.

Nope. It does go by the name Dystopia most of the times, but this one actually worked, which surprised me as well

You say corporations get the same rights as a person, but no retribution? It's almost like they right the laws.
Lots of people talk about how registering here, or doing that, will cause them ALL to stop contacting you. Kinda makes sense when you look at the small group of people who have all the money in the country, and then you read posts like yours. I could save time and just call the guy in charge if I had his number. (Or put him in a choke hold after beating up all his security guards....something like that)

[rant mode="on"] Advertising is way out of control in our country. Our capitalist system has a major downside and that is the ubiquitous, incessent nagging in the form of advertising that all of us must endure. I think the cynical, detached disposition of most of our children can be traced to the non-stop lying they've been exposed to since they've been old enough to stumble up to a TV screen and peer into it's vacuous depths. You aren't adequate. You aren't happy. You aren't real. ...until you buy our product. [rant mode="off"] I no longer watch network TV because of ads. I flip radio stations any time an ad comes on (or turn it off). I don't read billboards. I won't watch a video on the webnets if it's preceded by an ad. Elephant them all.
I don't have cable. But don't worry they still get you. Sometimes, when I buy a dvd, it is locked so you can't FF through the ads. What a crime.

But corporations are people, so why can't we throw them in jail? Gotta love the supreme court.

did they finally decide on that? I have trouble following dumb elephanting sunshine stories in the media , so I never saw.

Oh yea, they did (Citizens United). And it's why corporations can now (because of their free speech rights) put billions of dollars into electing the folks who will make them happy.

In the US there are no laws about "annoying" someone. There are laws about stalking, harassement and libel. Although libel isn't new. And for the other two there are laws which preclude those outside of online communication as well.

What pisses me off even more is that I've entered my number 4-5 times in the National Do Not Call registry and it lasts for about 1-2 months then I start getting calls again.

Are you sure about the context? First of course is that charitable and political organizations are excluded. Also those that have any existing business relationship with you are also excluded. If they are outside of that then you can look into your state laws which allow you personally to collect significant sums for each individual call.

In the US that is allowed via the freedom of speech clause in the Constitution. As with other rights there are downsides to all of them.

No end of studies have resulted in the finding that marketing is the major cause of unhappiness in the West. Money shortage? Not a problem, unless you're hit by piles of marketing. Marital problems? Most of them are caused by materialistic desires, inspired by... What could it be, now? Death and bereavement? These don't actually make people as unhappy as you would expect. They're way low down in the order, in the "what makes your life miserable" stakes. Being sad about loss and missing people doesn't actually make your life worse -- but if a marketing campaign blasted out that you must have at least two gramdmas, that would make you miserable. Believing that you need what you don't need is what makes you miserable, and marketing is all about making you believe that. Take 'em all out an shoot 'em, for the misery they cause.
