Hackability of Android

OK maybe i will be putting the spark on a debate that will end up in total genocide between android and iphone users but here goes. My boss went to a conference the other day where someone had a presentation of how easy it is to hack a Android device at the end of it they turned the device into a mic that transmitted any conversation in the room to their laptop. My question is shoudl i have sleepless nights over my samsung galaxy s2 or is this merely some apple propeganda ?

For what it is worth, a friend of mine works at a software security company and he thinks Android will replace desktop Windows as their largest market.

Based on what exactly? They aren't even in that market, nor to my knowledge have they announced plans to move into that market. Seems like his claim is based on pure guessing to me...

On a serious note I think they should have a "Taser" feature in all the newer smart phones. Think of the benefit! When on the subway or whatever everyone is zoned in on their phone. Some criminal comes up "Hey give me your money!" -swipe, tap tap... ZAPPPPAAPAPAPAPA... "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH DON'T TAZE ME BRO!!" I know I would feel safer if my S3 had a taze feature. Would be fun at parties too ;P

Based on a lot of activity in this area. Bluestacks[^] and AMD[^] are closely involved in developing this technology. Nobody's suggesting that every Microsoft shop is going to turn to desktop Android, but I think it's a distinct possibility that desktop Android could find its way into the marketplace. /ravi

I think you missed the point, he is saying that android will be "THE SECURITY COMPANIES" biggest market not that Windows will be replaced

Ah yes. I did miss that point. I would still doubt it though. Mobile devices are so sandboxed unless the user roots it there is little concern. And those users are very limited, and tend to know what they are doing.

But security companies like to sell products and there are probably more privately owned phones than PCs so a bigger potential market - especially if they can drum up some scare stories

Oh, that makes more sense. I misinterpreted it as Android will replace Windows on desktops, and there doesn't seem to be any basis to think that for that at the moment.

That's still not Android, that's just the apps. That's just emulation, not even close a useable desktop operating system. And honestly Android's model doesn't make much sense on a desktop, it's designed for low power, low resource devices. It's great on a phone, but it would be really annoying if your desktop OS started doing things closing programs you're running to free up memory without asking you, or only allow one running foreground program at a time.

Bigger potential market does not mean it will surpass the already in place market that exists. Its like pennies on the dollar in comparison. Valid points, however that same enterprise enviroment also includes mobiles and are as likely to treat these mobile computing devices in the same manner. all the security companies are looking at the handheld market as a growth area (desktop/server/laptop market is pretty static) whilst I do not claim that it will overtake windows I certainly would not be supprised if it did it is not just the imerging market of mobiles, windows is under threat from other OS's and cloud services in addition the OP does not state the company being refered to, if this is one of the smaller firms then it can well be the case that between the growth of android and the ever pressing pressure of the big players this particular company may find it being the case
