Why wouldn't a technocracy work?

If you think the RWARs are bad now, just wait until C++, C#, and Java devotees are all contending for power. Brace placement? Spaces or tabs? BAH! You ain't seen nothing yet. Doesn't matter to me, anyway. I'm an anarcho-monarchist. I tend to ignore power structures of all sorts...until I can see the whites of their eyes. (Yes, Virginia, the AR-15A really is accurate at 200 meters.)

Why wouldn't it work? Because I am the only one qualified to run such a government, and all of the rest of you would be revolting simply because, in your ignorance, you didn't agree, so nothing would ever get done.

That is probably a really good point, not to mention putting a group that is classically (generally speaking) socially awkward (or even dysfunctional) in charge of a society.

Government, whilst necessary, will always be inherently flawed regardless of who you put in charge, be they a lying politician or a blinkered technocrat. What we have might be bad but I really don't think putting a bunch of environmentalists or unix geeks or theoretical physicists in charge will help: why would they know more about life and running a country than a self-serving politician?

Please please please Unix geeks! They’d create a platform which is stable, reliable and secure, and just let specialists collaborate via simple yet powerful mechanisms (a.k.a. pipes) to solve actual government issues. That’d be the best government ever.

Right off, I don't think democracy is failing. It is simply being a "democracy"... I'd vote for a benevolent dictatorship as the best form of government; however, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely! Let's stay with something we can all vote on and complain about :cool:

Well, the biggest problem I can see is that it would be ruled by an elite group that wouldn't want any more people involved in the policies that would be imposed. With democracy, along with the idiots who never should have been elected in the first place, you get the occasional intelligent politician along with the dashed hope of getting logical rules in government.

First, technology does not solve problems. It facilitates solutions which are created by people (as are many of the problems, of course.) Second: the scientific method to solving social problems Science is in not the appropriate "technology" to solve social problems. People are. You can't solve social problems with Seldon-esque psycho-history and the like. Marc
