Better her than the Trots who lied and cheated, who opened our borders and who taxed us to death in order to create a benefit society filled with undereducated children with no hope of a future. Still, that is socialists for you, spend all of your money and have nothing to show for it.

You do know that the South pays for all the rest don't you? There has to be a capital city and London is it. If things were better in the North then they would have all the money. These places are hotbeds of the Trots and Unionism that destroyed this country in the 70's. Are you old enough to remember the Winter of Discontent? Crisis? What Crisis? as Jim Callaghan flew back in from his foreign holiday to be greeted with rubbish on the streets and bodies unburied. THAT is the legacy of socialism. How very caring the socialists were back then, condemning families to not being able to bury their dead. Instead of complaining about how unfair the North was treated, they should have been busier trying to improve it and making it work. It was the Labour Govt. of the 70's that destroyed more jobs than Thatcher did, and by the end she had created more than she destroyed. Facts, eh, don't you just find they get in the way of perceived political beliefs.

You can make the sums say that the south pays for everyone else, though the south gets a massively disproportionate amount of spending (it gets something like 200 times the per capita infrastructure spending, public sector jobs and salaries are mostly paid there, they are London weighted, and benefits that take account of rent or living costs are a London subsidy). But that's precisely because that Tory government gutted the north and its industries, and deliberately pulled all the wealth to the south. The Labour government of the 70s might have cocked things up, but that doesn't make Thatcher the 'greatest ever' – it just makes her an opportunistic ideologue who took the public upset with the unions to push through far more social change and movement of assets than was sensible. There has to be a capital city, but it doesn't have to centralise everything. Look at Germany, which manages to have successful cities all around it – its financial centre is on the other side of the country to the legislative capital, and its regional capitals like Munich are not treated badly like Liverpool or Cardiff are by the UK government. "These places", referring to everywhere except the comfortable SE? Are you really that blind to the rest of the country that you think you can pigeonhole all of it like that?

It was the Labour Govt. of the 70's that destroyed more jobs than Thatcher did, and by the end she had created more than she destroyed.

Her government destroyed jobs in the north, and in the other countries of the union, and made them in the south-east of England. A national balance of numbers has no meaning if you live in one region (or even one country – there's a reason Scotland never votes for a Tory).

No, Gordon Brown's 'light touch regulation' did that. You might like to read the cabinet papers from 1979, when Britain became the first ever European country to take a loan from the IMF - £3.9Bn. I particularly draw your attention to the late November and early December memoranda, where the cabinet is doing a perfect imitation of a coop of headless chickens, and admitted that the 1974 'economic' policy had totally failed. The papers, originally top secret, have been declassified. It was this that ruined British industry, and Thatcher had to put it right.

While I do think she was the last real man who occupied the role of PM, I don't believe she was the greatest PM. You belittle the nodding dog with this; "Oh Yes".

Weak. It's probably a fair assumption that industrialized countries are contributing more to the problem so expecting them to contribute more to the solution is only fair.
