1. Forget anything you ever learned in college not related to the absolute fundamentals. The real world awaits with large nasty teeth with which to devour you and the nice neat orderly world of academia. 2. Listen, ask questions when you can, but most of all listen. 2a. Be prepared to do a whole lot of monkey work. Sit down, do it, don't complain. 2b. Never complain 3. That's a whole big can 'o worms. You might as well ask "How do I make the best food". the answer varies and the adherents to various schools are... "opinionated". You'll have to figure this out by yourself with experience. 4. Google, CodeProject, StackOverflow, etc.

A lot of my favorite Dilberts date back to well before I started reading it regularly because Scott Adams had a much wider array of unused material back then. ex http://dilbert.com/strips/comic/1994-08-07/[^] http://www.dilbert.com/fast/1994-01-07/[^] http://dilbert.com/fast/1995-02-05/[^] http://www.dilbert.com/strips/comic/1995-04-03/[^] http://www.dilbert.com/fast/1995-11-13/[^]
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. No offense, but I'm a little worried they're handing that to the intern. "Designing good GUIs" is a black art practiced by a select few, none of whom seem to have worked on any software I ever used, if they exist at all. If you've made it a point to learn about Human-Computer Interaction, maybe you've got a shot at making a GUI that's good enough, which is the best thing I've ever said about a GUI.

How long is a piece of string? Some elaboration below, but as is this isn't a question anybody here can answer for you. It is however a very good question to ask your manager when you start work.

Sounds like you'll be doing what they consider to be boring design paperwork until you prove yourself, after which you'll be doing coding. I'm personally of the opinion that UI design work is more interesting than just coding, but maybe that's just me.

My personal preference is to use tools for paper-prototyping, while remembering that users aren't technically inclined. This isn't to say that they're idiots - quite on the contrary, they are experts in their own jobs, just that they probably don't have design experience. Which is where you come in.

Google.

Never describe yourself as a programmer, coder, intern or developer. You're a person who adds value to the business, often this involves doing some programming. The faster you can add value to the business the more valuable you are to the business. Bear in mind that it's practically impossible to be the most valuable person in a business using your coding skills alone - if a business owner really needs more code doing quickly they can outsource it to 10 people, but the ability to talk to users and design things that are appropriate simply can't be done better by adding people.

As a programmer, here are the most important things you need to get out of your education: 1. Working hard will bring success. 2. The amount of work will vary (think finals week and the week between semesters: sometimes-too-much/sometimes-too-little) 3. Shoot for getting an "A" at work. Getting an "A" still needs to matter to you. There is no report card, but you are still graded. 4. Not every boss will have the same criteria for you to get an "A". Part of your job is to find out what it takes. 5. Never stop learning and growing. "B" students go home at the end of the day and chill. "A" students will spend a few hours per week improving themselves and learning new stuff. Successful people do this and seem to magically excel at everything, but it is not magic. It is a unique kind of homework that must be self-assigned (assigned by you, not your boss). Some things you might not have learned at school: 1. Sometimes, it is more important to be liked than it is to do a good job. 2. Some things just take time. Be patient. 3. Show good manners (related to #1) 4. If your boss wants to micro-manage you, play along. If you play along, the boss will become satisfied and (trust you) leave you alone. In contrast, if you resist, the boss will become more suspicious and badger you much longer. So, always be ready to account for your time. Sorry, I mean, account for the company's time (because when they are paying you, it is really their time, not yours). 5. Make sure you are providing a good value to your employer. In good times or bad, if you are a good value, you will always be in demand.

Hi, I som year ago I participated in an internship as a graduate and I would like to tell you one thing. If you have MCPD/MCTS and experience with a lot of technologies, you should really find a well paid job. If you find an internship instead, they will let you do the same as if it was "real job" but you will get less money because you are only an internship employee. This is exactly my experience from one internship at one of the well known international IT companies (but I dont tell the name). Best Regards, J. K.
