There's Bob, obviously. So we're not alone. And then there's also the drake equation

Interesting. I think he's missing a few factors, not the least of which is there anybody listening with the right apparatus?

Yeah - we're here to show the rest of the world how to take a good idea, establish a government around that idea, and corrupt it beyond all semblance of it's original form. Wait - that makes us like - the rest of the world.

We all know that power corrupts. Corrupting people is bad. Therefore, we should only give power to those who are already corrupt. ;P

No, that's precisely the opposite of the scientific method. You start with the assumption that you don't know anything; you come up with a hypothesis, and then try to disprove it. If enough people fail to disprove it, then it becomes the accepted theory. You use the word "theory" instead of the word "fact" simply because you're not ruling out the possibility that future evidence might shed new light on the matter.

How do you know? Organic molecules form quite easily. But there's a long way from that to the DNA -> RNA -> Protein cycle. Having said that, the sheer size of the universe in terms of stars suggests that if life does not start easily we can nevertheless expect there to be lots of it.

Actually the transition from Karyotes to Prokaryotes to Eukaryotes was a bigger jump, biologically speaking, than from single celled to multi. The LUCA was probably more closely related to an archaea rather than a bacteria, and was flitting around the oceans some 3.8 billion years ago. Now it is obvious that as this was a prokaryote and didn't just pop into existance it must have evolved from a simpler organism that entered some sort of simple symbiotic relationship so as to form a simple prokaryote. Proof of life extends to about 3.85 BYA, but there is evidence of life from chemical analysis of zircons from 4.4 BYA, thus meaning that life started before the LHB. Some see this as evidence that life started not once, but twice. Intriguing thought that within 100 million years of planetary formation there was life on Earth. If one accepts this theory then one must accept that life is so universally abundant that it will be the norm rather than the exception. Of course one has to factor in other biological, chemical and temporal factors as to how easy it is for intelligent life to evolve, and of course some civilisations could have risen and fallen before even the Earth was formed (Though not long before this, but that is another argument).

How big was your sample? And who did you use as a control group? Your personal feeling that "most scientists are arrogant and full of themselves" probably says more about you than it does about scientists. I feel the same way about religionists, but that doesn't mean I can assume they're all members of the WBC!

How big was your sample? And who did you use as a control group? Your personal feeling that "most scientists are arrogant and full of themselves" probably says more about you than it does about scientists. I feel the same way about religionists, but that doesn't mean I can assume they're all members of the WBC!

Well, you've probably a point there. Being rather myopic aren't I? Still it is a general impression that a lot of people have. Not that that validates anything.

I don't know about you, but I am. :sigh: “It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.” ― Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
