No we are not alone and they have visited us before but they went to a Justin Bieber concert and have moved far away stating there is no intelligent life here on earth.

Life start so easily
How do you know? Organic molecules form quite easily. But there's a long way from that to the DNA -> RNA -> Protein cycle. Having said that, the sheer size of the universe in terms of stars suggests that if life does not start easily we can nevertheless expect there to be lots of it.

So do I, just based on symmetry principles.

Whether is evolves beyond the bacterial level is another matter.
On Earth wasn't it 2.5 billion years of single-celled life followed by a billion of multi-celled? That suggests the transition is a difficult one doesn't it?
Kevin
Actually the transition from Karyotes to Prokaryotes to Eukaryotes was a bigger jump, biologically speaking, than from single celled to multi. The LUCA was probably more closely related to an archaea rather than a bacteria, and was flitting around the oceans some 3.8 billion years ago. Now it is obvious that as this was a prokaryote and didn't just pop into existance it must have evolved from a simpler organism that entered some sort of simple symbiotic relationship so as to form a simple prokaryote. Proof of life extends to about 3.85 BYA, but there is evidence of life from chemical analysis of zircons from 4.4 BYA, thus meaning that life started before the LHB. Some see this as evidence that life started not once, but twice. Intriguing thought that within 100 million years of planetary formation there was life on Earth. If one accepts this theory then one must accept that life is so universally abundant that it will be the norm rather than the exception. Of course one has to factor in other biological, chemical and temporal factors as to how easy it is for intelligent life to evolve, and of course some civilisations could have risen and fallen before even the Earth was formed (Though not long before this, but that is another argument).

he didn't say anything about the scientific method, he talked about humans and scientists (who are humans) thinking they know everything... he also didn't say anything about facts or theories either.

Justin Beiber is being shot into space. I just hope it is a 5 year mission.

Really? That's not what I've observed. Many, if not most, scientists are arrogant and full of themselves. That's what I've seen.

Your personal feeling that "most scientists are arrogant and full of themselves" probably says more about you than it does about scientists. I feel the same way about religionists, but that doesn't mean I can assume they're all members of the WBC!

I work with scientists and concur with you as from my experience, as a group, they are very much driven by evidence and not opinion.

Well, you've probably a point there. Being rather myopic aren't I? Still it is a general impression that a lot of people have. Not that that validates anything.

I don't know about you, but I am. :sigh: “It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.” ― Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

Not at all, I have several collegues sitting right next to me as I write. You needn't worry about being left all alone with me! What you SHOULD be worried about is being left all alone with DD! ;P

Even religious types don't assume humans are the only intelligent life form that exists: they figure a creator exists who by definition can't be human. (Whether they see it like that or not is up to them) From a scientific point of view, it would be very egocentric to assume we were - if would make our little, tiny corner of the universe "special" and we have been trying to avoid assuming that for millennia. In fact, most of our most important discoveries about the universe stem precisely from refusing to believe we are in a "special place" and working out what that means about the rest of it.
