"Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997I saw the email from MS about the VS 13 preview. It's not even a month that I installed VS12. I cannot believe they can come up with an IDE as big as VS as quickly as they are. I do not think there will be anything new or better from VS2010. IMHO VS12 was hurried up given the flaws it has. So I do not have any faith in VS13 as of now.

"Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997I thought "Farfegnugen" is from a VW commercial? The joy of driving (Fahrvergnügen). However, for a German speaker the word "Farfegnugen" was hard to recognize and looked more like the name from a Viking good :-)

According to my knowledge it means "driving pleasure", but I'm pretty sure you knew that. I believe there's a story I haven't heard hidden in that sentence.
Be excellent to each other. And... PARTY ON, DUDES! Abraham Lincoln
If that is the word, the correct spelling would be "Fahrvergnügen". Of course if he's never seen it in writing he wouldn't know. There is no colloquial hidden meaning behind that word that I know of. But, looking at the VW ad mentioned below, I do agree that german advertisement in general is boring, so you might connect quite a lot of german words with that interpretation (nothing of interest) ;)

"Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997I think they are going to have a nasty surprise when it goes to market. Considering it's a full year-version bump it means that it's also a full price tag refresh for anyone who isn't an MSDN subscriber (and probably not worth the 15 minutes spent installing it even if they are). Sorry Microsoft, Visual Studio is one of the best pieces of software in existence - but I am going to skip this one (that is, unless there is a appropriated priced upgrade option from VS2012). "Farfegnugen" is spot on - I think VS2012.1 had more feature additions than this. Should have kept it in dev for one or two more years, tsk tsk.

One thing it does have that I am interested in is more C++11 support. November CTP included variadic templates and initializer_lists that were buggy and did not have std library changes. With the Visual Studio 2013 preview, the quality of implementation is improved, and the features now have std library support. In addition, with a go-live license - this is the first time you can use variadic templates in production with Visual C++.
Still way behind GCC and CLang, both of which are now C++ 11 feature complete. All we need is CLang integration with the IDE, and we could forget the MS compiler. Its not fit for purpose any more.

"Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997The joy of driving is spelled "Fahrvergnügen" (from a German BMW advertisement). There is another German word for the MSDN quote: "Marketingsprech" (marketing talk). Means a lot of politically correct text and no contents. Engineers should entirely skip these or at least don't expect any added value. The older I get, the better T was.

No, not exactly, although every time I boot my Win 8 machine I have to explicitly hit a button to go to the desktop and then wait another 30-60 seconds for Explorer to load. Win 8.1 is bringing back boot-to-desktop and although the button for the start "menu" is there, all it does is bring up the huge full screen super annoying menu. Granted 8.1 is better than it is currently on 8 with vertical scrolling and sorting, but in the current version of Win8, finding my installed programs is not easy, to the point I just made shortcuts to all of them on the desktop which I hate to do.

I have never had this problem. I'm able to boot, login, click on desktop, and begin doing things all in a total of 30 seconds...

"Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997There is a German word "Fahrvegnugen" that was used in car commercials a few years back, but it means "The Joy of Driving"; the word you mentioned does not exist.

Me too, and I don't plan to "upgrade" any time soon. What for?

Very true -- been running Win8 on my laptop for some time and I don't think I ever use any of the apps and rarely even go to the start screen. I pin'd the apps I used to the taskbar and just use that. I think for a touch device they may be nice, but I haven't found any need for the store apps on a laptop.
Actually, the start screen is a great diversion for my 2 year old son. He loves it. He learned that if he hits the Windows key, it goes to the start screen. Then he messes around in there, and leaves my desktop alone. Great diversion! :-D

Well, the biggest thing would be C++11 standard support...

I couldn't agree more. I was an early adopter of Windows 8 (when it was released to MSDN partners) and I initially liked it. However, as a functional work system I found Windows 8 to be a productivity buster. The Start Screen / Metro Apps UI is an interesting idea but on a laptop its far more cumbersome to use than just using my Kindle Fire HD or iPod. I think this is a case of letting a PC be a PC and letting a tablet be a tablet. The PC/Tablet hybrid just isn't functional; at least not at this time, in my opinion.

I guess if you're looking for that. To me it doesn't matter.

Well, the biggest thing about the new standard is that it includes standard threads... that's really big IMO.

That's cool, if you're writing C++. Since I'm writing C# for desktop and Web apps, it's non-sequitur to me. :)

Anyway, i'll probably stick with Visual Studio 2012 unless I really need to move or it supports overloaded constructors in C++.
