Are you married to each other?

Not if he referred to her as the junior. No married man would be so stupid as to suggest that about his wife.

Be a good "senior" colleague and do the teaching; do not simply chastise, explain the "why" it is an error and the "how" to fix it. ;)

it was a simple closed question with only yes/no as possible options and I didn't chastise anyone. had I lost my rag with her I could understand her point but I have had more heated discussions with my toothbrush.

well and truly. All I did yesterday was ask a junior colleague if there was any need for a hard coded string value in the call to the base("yadda") constructor from a derived class. SVN tells me who did it and when, so there's no use claiming it was someone else. Nice try though. All I need to know is does this hardcoded string have any significance to any functionality, because if it does I'll have to fix the bug that only produces files with a "yadda" prefix regardless of what you put in the textbox some other way. There's really no need to go all red, start crying and shout at me. She's not talking to me at all today.

            Could have been worse:

Ah, but our SVN started with who knows what, went to CVS, was converted from a monolithic project to one that was componentized. The senior guy that did the checkins for these steps is named as the "author", but vehemently denies being such for many of the files. In one case, the file went back so far, we have no idea who originally wrote it. Not that it matters, they're long gone. (Two companies ago, when I converted a CVS repository to something else, I made sure that unknown users were declared administrator precisely to avoid this.)

Hi Jim, if you aak a simple question in a social context where there is no consensual reality, or operational definition of sanity, then, I would postulate, the quantum-mechanics of chance are fractally unpredictable, rather than relativistically unpredictable, and to say you have "no chance," is, quite possibly, to say simultaneously: "there is every chance." That you have some concern, and empathy, for a fellow employee's emotional reaction, is, I think, admirable. And, imho, any employee that cannot respond to non-aggressive appropriate feedback, and questions, directly related to the company's work, without inappropriate emotional reactions, deserves to have their suitability for employment reconsidered. yours, Bill

“Human beings do not live in the objective world alone, nor alone in the world of social activity as ordinarily understood, but are very much at the mercy of the particular language which has become the medium of expression for their society. It is quite an illusion to imagine that one adjusts to reality essentially without the use of language and that language is merely an incidental means of solving specific problems of communication or reflection." Edward Sapir, 1929
