Even more amusing when you realize that Android is in fact GoogleLinux with a seriously out of date kernel and all the apps written in Java! It just goes to show that it's all about the UX details. Linux dominating the desktop could have happened years ago if those developing it had only understood that. MS have been incredibly lucky that they did not.

And that's because it's development has been driven predominatly by software engineers and rocket scientists who love the whole command line thing. They don't get that 99.5% of actual users are not like them, have no idea and no interest in how a computer works, they just want to click "Send" (or whatever) and see their email/farcebook post/etc. happen. Heck, some struggle with that. If anyone had actually bothered to rope in some graphic designers and UX designers (I'm guessing Microsoft, along with Apple have buildings full of them) then just maybe that would have happened.

When MS wants to update itself, it just nags at you, or forces a restart. My Nexus 7 has just notified me that it's downloaded Android 4.3 but there isn't enough battery to upgrade it, but that's OK - connect it to the charger and it'll do it then... MS: take note, please. Upgrades can be done transparently... And politely!

You could always choose the way Windows updates will be delivered to you: fully automatic, download but prompt for install, prompt for both download and install, don't check for updates. I think it will only take a few seconds to choose an option that suits you.

:) :thumbsup: I was waiting for someone to say that. I nuked them ages ago and the only time they bother me is when they tell me there's an update available. I do of course, check to see what and why - installing as deemed necessary. Works perfectly well for me. :shrug: My computer, my rules!

The real reason that most Linux distributions look as if they were created by a bunch of amateurs in their spare time is simply that they were created by a bunch of amateurs in their spare time. To produce polished software requires a dedicated team of professionals working specifically toward that goal, as in a big corporation. So my point is that no matter what the people who work on Linux understood or understand, Linux will never compete on the desktop until it is reworked by a for-profit organization.
The difficult we do right away... ...the impossible takes slightly longer.

Out of date? Yeah, the 2.6 kernel is old, but it is used a lot for embedded devices like Android since it is stable and works. If you want an old kernel look at windows, it goes back to 2000 in a pretty much unchanged state.

I understand how a computer works down to motherboard component level and still just want to click "Send" over typing out some error prone and cryptic command in an archaic shell.

Aye Android does it how it should be. I own a: Samsung 10.1 Tab 2 Nexus 7 (Cracked Screen/Digitizer) :(( HTC One Development learning curve is medium but well worth the rewards, especially when Android now has market share.

And not to forget, MS updates kills your data at a rate faster than you imagine, while in Droid I can set updates to Wi-Fi only.

I regularly clear the ram on my Note 1 and a nice little message pops say it has closed 25 apps WTF, why do I have 25 apps active on the bloody phone when all it is doing is sitting there on the desk, they are obviously not essential to the operation of the phone!

I took the defaults when I setup the Surface, the only nagging I get are when it needs to reboot. My last android, it didn't offer an option not to reboot, just did it.
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.

Pretty sure that any number of commercial organizations have touch the Linux core. I would actually be very surprised if every bit of code in the core hasn't been touched or reviewed by multiple commercial interests (by programmers paid to do just that.) I would suspect that much of the essential basics outside the core have also received some treatment by professionals. As one moves further and further from the basics is it possible that it is entirely amateur. However amateur likely only means that they were not paid to work on Linux (or associated) but not that they are not in fact professional programmers.
