    I try and lead by example. I try and coach not curse. I try - Lord Knows I Try - to teach the youngin's how to cherish this wonderful, inconsistent and illogical language we have, and to use the depth and breadth of its vocabulary to its fullest. And yet some insist, provocatively, on abusing its fulsome goodness with the use of Words Abhorrent Unto John Galsworthy. I'm watching you, Nagy.

    Youngin's is not a word. It is improper to start a sentence with And. Please do not coach people.

      This is actual code in our codebase:

      // Items in Bad must have counterparts in Good.
      private static readonly string[] _badWords =
      {
      <list of really naughty words >, "gotten"
      };

      private static readonly string[] _goodWords =
      {
      <list of really naughty words santised>, "acquire, obtain, come by, receive, gain, or any of the many, many, MANY other words that deserve to be used instead" };

      ...
      // some code to search and replace bad words with good words.

      <Serious Dad-frown and a pointing finger> Don't make me use it! </Serious Dad-frown and a pointing finger>

      That's what you're upset over? When use of "impact" where "affect" is meant is rampant?

        Are we then to coach dogs, elephants, vultures? No sense your words make.

          No - that example is too cut and dried. I prefer my idiosyncrasies to be about matters that are firmly on shaky ground.

            You speak real good. Actually I feel like that now. I can't use any of the rich, colourful terms we have in Oz becuase I just get blank stares, or worse: they just pick a random interpretation of what they think I said and go with it.

              As you may remember, Bob Barker always would ask you to spay or neuter your cats at the end of the Price Is Right. I guess in the end this has similar population control effects. I'll make sure to use this word more often.

                  There's a lot of bad English in your post. I pity those you're leading.
