But, is the meaning clear? Does he want May 1, 2014 or January 5, 2014? Regionalization... arrgh! That's why I tend to write the phone as alphabetic and avoid the issue...

Down that path like a nightmare, I work with a POS call Murex where the dealers can enter all sorts of crap 1.2m, .78k, 300k and the system interprets it. The problem comes when they supply the original values to downstream systems. PLEASE make the bastards conform to some data standards.
