      But, is the meaning clear? Does he want May 1, 2014 or January 5, 2014? Regionalization... arrgh! That's why I tend to write the phone as alphabetic and avoid the issue...

        ISO. International Standards Organization. Your regional customs are irrelevant. You will be assimilated. Also, year-month-day sorts easily.

              I take it you prefer duck typing? Whenever I have my duck typing my code I get these sorts of issues too :^)

                      Down that path like a nightmare, I work with a POS call Murex where the dealers can enter all sorts of crap 1.2m, .78k, 300k and the system interprets it. The problem comes when they supply the original values to downstream systems. PLEASE make the bastards conform to some data standards.
