Belgium has the first vending machine that only sells crates of beer and sixpacks[^]. The legal drinking age is 16, but every Belgian has an electronic id card so the machine can check if you're permitted to use it's services.

    Meh.

What do you get when you cross a joke with a rhetorical question? --- The metaphorical solid rear-end expulsions have impacted the metaphorical motorized bladed rotating air movement mechanism.

That's cool. I like the idea of ID Cards a lot. They are not popular due to people's paranoia about liberty, government spying etc. But, in my wallet I have about 12 different Id cards. Some for banks, some for work, some for driving, some for my train. From a systems point of view, that sucks. Just have one and assign services to it. The benefits would be manyfold.

      Regards, Rob Philpott.

Well, yes there is that. But you can look at it the other way; Because people tend to keep their cards together when you lose your wallet you've got a lot of phone calls to make - this way only one. The hope would be also that through 'better' security/biometrics etc. it would be worth less in the hands of a thief.

          Regards, Rob Philpott.

Yeah. When they have a fingerprint reader on the card, which can be a little thicker since you only need to carry the one, and it only works when you are physically holding it, then I would think it was a good thing.

Certainly that is what the people selling the solutions rely on. On the other hand when someone comes up with a system that cannot be compromised in some way by other humans then I would suspect that the creator wasn't human.

I guess you have to be born to it, and there is much to recommend it, but I hate Flanders. Its so drab, in a depressing way. But yeah, they have loads of automats. coffee, bread, all sorts of stuff. Not surprised its beer. SHame it isn't Stella though, its nicer than Jupiler.

We can just give them the finger. [Apologies to anyone who has no fingers, or arms, etc.]

Nice. :) So i sense in the comments that they don't use ID's in the US? Or do you guys see every different type of card as ID? In The Netherlands we have 2 ID's: The driving license and IDcard/passport. Then there are bankcards, shopcards etc but they are not qualified to use as official ID(they don't contain a picture. ) Also, about the fingerprints: In the Netherlands they have to scan your fingerprints before they can make a IDcard. I'm not sure, but i believe that the scans are saved in a database and in a chip on the idcard/passport

Cheaper and you don't need to have eye contact with other people when you drink at home, which is very important in Flemish culture.
