So I came across a very interesting quiz. So lets see who can get this one... I go to a food stall and buy a burger, chips and a cool drink. The drink is $ 0.30 and the burger is & 1.00 more than the chips. So if I paid $ 1.60 for the meal, how much did I pay for the chips?

$0.15. It's not that difficult a one to figure out.

It's 15c (I wish I can buy chips for that!) but there's something about that question that provides a strong urge to say 30c. I've got a very similar question wrong in the past by saying the 'obvious' thing.

Make the question even more simple and it might trick more ;): if a meal with a burger and a drink costs $1.10 and the burger costs $1 more than the drink. how much did you pay for the drink?

I have not looked at any of the other comments but my calculation brings the chips to $0.15.

This one sounds to me like our joke about different schoolsystems The Question for the "Hauptschule" (goes from 5th to 9th class / mostly lazy and not that intelligent ppl)

A Farmer sells a sack of potatoes for 50€. The production costs are 40€. Calculate the yield.

"Realschule" (goes from 5th to 10th class / the "normal" ppl)

A farmer sells a sack of potatoes for 50€. The production costs are 4/5 of the revenues. How high is the farmers yield?

"Gymnasium" (goes from 5th to 13th/12th class / the "intelligent" ppl)

An agrarian economist sells a set of subterral fieldfruits for a set of money (G).
G has the cardinal number 50. For the elements g of the set G applies g = 1,00€. The set of production costs (H) is 10(cardinal numbers) less than set G. Draw a figure of the set H as partial set of G und and give the cardinal number of the set E for the Question :
How high is the yield E of the agrarian economist in units of g?

"Waldorfschule" (Mostly ppl that are not able to concentrate)

A farmer sells a sack of potatoes for 50€. The production costs are 40€. The yield is 10€.
Task: Underline the word potatoes and sing a song to it.

:) I hope my translation is not that bad so you get the message

It was so simple I've been reading the question over and over looking for the trick cos I couldn't believe it would have been posted unless there was one.

Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Some people think of it like this. $1.60 - $0.30 = $1.30 So if the burger is $1 more the answer is $0.30 because $1.30 - $1 = $0.30  Sad part is when I asked other people some of them really had that 'logic'...

They'll be OK, I believe all fast food places have tills that work the prices out for you so when they're selling this stuff they shouldn't get it wrong.

It's 15c (I wish I can buy chips for that!) but there's something about that question that provides a strong urge to say 30c. I've got a very similar question wrong in the past by saying the 'obvious' thing.

Ask this question (or a variation) to others and stand in awe to how many answer exactly that

Make the question even more simple and it might trick more ;): if a meal with a burger and a drink costs $1.10 and the burger costs $1 more than the drink. how much did you pay for the drink?

The original question was exactly that. with a bat and ball. So i thought I'd do a social experiment and make it a bit more difficult to see if they fall much easier for a simple or a bit more complex question. :)
